Looking on skyscanner I can fly from Glasgow to Canada via London cheaper than I can fly from London to Canada. Noticed the same on other routes.

Why is this and is there a workaround?

Used to live near Glasgow, has its good points as well as bad 😅

That was just an example, plenty of other routes where the same applies i.e. cheaper to fly on the same flight from another starting point rather than doing it direct.

If we were talking different routes and airlines I could understand it.

Direct flights are usually more expensive from past experience, but I don't mind going to different cities even if it is just the airport

I think there was a story the past month or so, about a student who flies home via France or some other European country because its cheaper than the train from london to wherever it is he lives in the uk!

This works for loads of routes. Just try some of the smaller UK&I airports vs. the usual London and you can save huge amounts. Sometimes getting Business Class for the same price as Prem Eco etc. i.e. Out of Dublin, Shannon, and then European airports like Brussels, Frankfurt, Paris etc. Then just get a cheap flight to that airport initially, just make sure you have good time so you can pick up your baggage and check yourself in again at the airport!
