4WD

Is the F48 permanent 4WD or mainly FWD with the rear kicking in when required?

Predominantly FWD - rear kicks in as needed. No option to switch manualy to 4WD.

Not sure if its actually a Haldex-branded system, but it works the same way as the Haldex AWD system under all Volvo AWDs and many Audi/VW AWDs. Nothing wrong with the system. Before coming to BMW had a number of AWD Volvos and had no complaints as to how the "part-time" AWD system works - its there when you need it. The latest generation Haldex systems (Gen 5?) pre-charge the RWD and are claimed to operate within 1/8 of a revolution of the rear wheel. Well regarded by Volvo drivers particularly in snow and ice conditions.

I was watching an interview with a X1 engineer who said when the car was in sport mode, it would send more power to the rear wheels to perform more like a rear drive vehicle.

Do you have a reference for this? I've searched the available technical documents.

Sorry. Just tried to find it again. It was at a test event where BMW set up a course and spoke with a German engineer. I think it was subtitled.

Thanks for looking. Everything I've read about the Xdrive system suggests that the Performance Control simply alters the DSC/traction control sensitivity (and it's not very clear on how and how much), not the actual torque split. I think it's pretty much the same as all current Haldex systems, which send drive to the rear as soon as any front-wheel slippage is detected. I had Gen 3 Haldex on my Audi 8P S3, and it was very sure-footed, so I'm keen to experience the latest version.

Would be great if it did...

Having the capability to select the offset of power would be great if available in the driver control settings. We can already configure sport mode to either use it to implement just gearbox or chassis and steering settings. Adding full $WD as an option would have been nice.

Opposite question: Does EcoPro disable AWD?

The nice little diagram that appears on the screen when you select it appears to just show the FWD drivetrain (In environmentally friendly green!), whereas in Sport both ends are shown in go-faster red...

Check out the sticky at the top of the forum about tech training docs, it has an excellent description of how the drive train works.
