A look at the competition.......
Interesting day today, went with my missus to the Merc dealer to pick up her new E220D Coupe.
A very nice car I have to say, I drove it for a while this evening. But a very different demographic it's aimed at for sure. The 2.2 Diesel engine is exceptionally smooth and quiet, I was very impressed with it. But it's in no way sporty. Steering is very light, even in 'sport' mode and it's a soft, luxurious ride with that suspension. Leather is very nice, better than the standard Dakota in our Beemers, smoother and perforated with nice integrated head rests. Very bright LEDs, they work well. But their Infotainment system is well behind iDrive. But it works, I'll give it that. It's a very nice car, very well put together and is a real Merc, with a nice, luxurious ride. The missus loves it. But I can see why I'm a BM fan! The sporty ride, engine in my 430D GC and overall feel just suits me to a tee. In the same vein, the wife has always been a Merc person. That's the great thing about cars, there's a brand to suit every taste. Was a good experience to see the Merc dealership in action. The guy we dealt with was a very nice, old school bloke. He was grilling me about the PCP deal I did with BMW and comparing GMFVs etc. They had a GT in the showroom. All I can say is wow.....what a car. |

I loved the old mercs, which they had a few there, but most of the new range didn't do it for me. I would have an SLS or an AMG Gt in a heart beat for sure though, but I simply cannot afford these cars |

The trouble with the current E is the extremely dated interior. Test drove an E400 coupe when looking at the 4 series, and that's what killed the MB for me. With the adaptive dampers the handling was pretty good.

Yeah, the BMW interior is a lot less fussy and uses the technology well and keeps the buttons to a minimum. The E class has a dial pad above the aircon and a load of other buttons all over the place.

Surprised about your comments re: the engine being quiet and smooth. Critics have always pointed to MB's diesel 4 cylinder engines in the C and E Class being rattly and gruff. If it was me especially with the new model around the corner I wouldn't be looking at this car, there's better out there for the money
