New 228i owner + upgrades

Hello everybody!

I just placed my order for a Mineral Grey 228i - M sport Line, and I can't wait for it to arrive!

Right now I'm driving a 1.2tsi polo as I wasn't sure if I was going to stay in Greece, but as I've finally decided to stay, I went for an upgrade.

Previously I owned a Cosmo RX8 tuned with a Greddy turbo kit upgrade and that car was fun as hell to drive, but got a bit much for my daily commute to work as it was always sideways... Hehe

The 2 reminds me a bit of the rx8, definitely more refined and subtle, but the 50/50 weight distribution. and power is quite similar.

The only thing I'm wondering is, will the lack of a LSD bother me? I can get a 20% discount if I order the MPerformance LSD before I actually receive the car, but seeing as I coughed up a large amount for the down payment I'm contemplating if its worth it.

Also, regarding exhausts, I would like to change the downpipe and muffler to something sportier (definitely not catless), but I only seem to find parts for the m235i in greece. Does anyone know if these fit (even with minor mods)?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

You can get an LSD for the 228i? I thought BMW only offered them for the M235…

Yeah apparently there is an LSD for the 228i. I went ahead and ordered it as i knew i would be missing it.

But now in another dillema, My dealer told me they have an AC Schnitzer ecu upgrade for my engine, he sent me the details in an email, but i cant find any reviews. On paper it looks confusing... It says it will output ~295hp but the 0-100 drops from 5.9 to 5.6. Every other tune ive read, jb4, gsr etc suggest times nearer to the the 5.1-5.2 range.

Does anyone have experience with AC tunes? He told me dealer guarantee is still valid after install for the entire duration of the original guarantee.

I'm sorry but if he told you that the BMW warranty will still be intact after installing that dodgy ECU flash tune, he is talking out of an orifice other than his mouth. You should avoid that sort of thing at all costs and get as respectable a tune as you can afford or you will have no warranty at all.

Yeah, they provide me with a written guarantee.

But im more concerned of the performance gains. And the fact that the information available is scarce. Considering it is a large international brand, backed by BMW, why isnt this tune more widely seen?

AC Schnitzer is one of the best tuner here in Germany, warranty is settling up with BMW directly. But it is a box and very expensive.

Hi barfastic (and vchris)
Glad to see some more owners from Greece.

I've gone with a custom muffler with dual exhaust tips (coupled with the M Perf diffuser) and resonator delete in my 228 and I like it a lot.
If you need more info about the shop pm me.
I think its better to leave the dp as it is.

About the MPerf LSD, are you sure that it is for the 228?
I am in the same boat and after asking my dealer they insist that its only for the M235 and not suitable for the 228 (it makes sense, not the same drivetrain).
Please let me know if you have more info about that.

As for the AC Schnitzer tuning box, it works at 100% after 80kmh and just gives a fraction of its boost below that.
Hence the smaller gain in 0-100 (but gives remarkable gain in high speeds).

If your 228 has a manual transmission the differential is a 3.91. The M performance differential is a 3.08. In general the car will be slower with the BMW LSD. There are certainly traction limited situations where it'd be faster though.

If it's an automatic it'll be the same ratio with improved traction. Definitely an upgrade.

I'm very curious if it fits and is warranted by BMW. I was considering the differential myself.

I am pretty sure BMW does not make, or license, a LSD for the 228i. Jury-rigging one made for the M235i will surely invalidate your warranty.

The F22 228 is listed under the fit for this part. The driveline is exactly the same design behind the engine. I like the higher gear ratio of the 6MT so unless there's an option to keep this ratio when getting an LSD then I'm out until I really need it. That won't be for a long while though.

Hello Dimitris and Chris!

I havent actually seen any 2 seties in Athens, so seeing two other Greeks is quite a suprise to me!

My Dealer (Spanos) which happens to be the authorized dealer of schnitzer, and BMW performance parts confirms it fits.

Part #: 33107555610 (33-10-7-555-610)

I have an automatic so the ratio shouldnt be different.

As for the AC schnitzer tune, im quite dissapointed it only boost after 80km. Now the JB4 seems like a more reasonable choice.

Also, regarding the muffler, do you have any videos/photos Dimitris?

Barry, FYI: AC Schnitzer is the world's leading BMW tuner/custom model developer. They offer a full warranty for their products. More experienced than Dinan. For European based BMW owners they are an excellent choice.

The ACS tune is supposed to give something like 30-40% of its full tune until 80kmh...
Tbh most tunes doesnt give full boost for example in 1st gear and some not even in 2nd... but still that bugs me too because if you are lets say at 60kmh in 3rd and floor it, its gonna have no significant difference from before...

Regarding the muffler here are some photos and vids...

Does anyone know where i can source BMW M Performance parts in europe? My dealer jsut quoted me an exuberant amount of money for the m235i M performance exhaust (~1700€ without Install) and without the Diffuser (an additonal ~600€) which i understand is necessary for it to fit.

Looking online at the usual bmw performance part sites in the US, i saw that the price for the system with the carbon tips and the diffuser is around ~1300$ (~1150€).

I know i have to calculate in international shipping costs and duty tax, but does it REALLY come out to 1200€ more?

Is there any european online store that sells these parts?
