Drive carefully!

Made the journey back down home to Herts from Scotland last night and in all my years of traipsing up and down the country I've never seen so many police cars out and about and pulling folk over!

Many times I never see a single marked car, but I passed 6 cars which had been pulled over, and saw at least the same again on bridges, parked on slip roads, and in those special spots they have.

I reckon a few folks got off to a shite start to the new year!

They do this regularly where I am.

They routinely 'swamp' the M6 Toll, 2 camera vans and about 12 police cars, majority unmarked 330d Tourers.

Last year I was in convoy with 6 of them lol.

Around here it's mainly catching uninsured, banned, druggies, or drunks.

A big lay-by near me had around 8 cars that looked to have been either seized or driver nicked.

Also seen Vosa doing checks on cars that have been pulled over.

Admittedly those are the things I would like seeing more off, rather than just speeding.

Yes I've seen those kind of tactics in a specific place before, but this was something I saw over the course of an entire 400 mile journey.
Thankfully, I'd taken the hint early on, and with the weather absolutely foul I'd set cruise on 80 and just relaxed.

Do you think it's due to new year and them trying to catch drink drivers etc. or a general upping of patrols to catch motorists?

Yeah between vans on bridges and marked and unmarked cars I gave up trying to make progress between Gretna and Glasgow, and no matter what I just go on cruise control and 75 there. The wife got pulled over about 3 years back and my last points were from a van on a bridge there about 8 years back.

Yes my first thoughts were that it's a seasonal campaign type of thing, and hence under orders to pull over more drivers, but more about getting breath tests done that speeding per se. The roads were the quietest I've seen them in years though (hence the decision to drive back at that time), which then may have meant they had more time on their hands generally too.

I can't remember the laws now on this... do they have to witness driving which leads to a suspicion of drink driving in order to breath test, or is it that they can decide to randomly pull anyone over for a test?

I thought they changed it so they could randomly pull anyone? I maybe wrong on this though.

Are the vans out at night, or do they only operate in daylight hours?

Vans are staffed by civilians and only work daylight hours. Though it may actually just be more office hours as I've never seen one out in the evening during summer.

There may have been vans or vehicles using ANPR and only pulling the vehicles that are showing as no tax, insurance, MOT, and then checking for alcohol once stopped.

More than likely on that day due to the abundance of people travelling home after staying with family or friends over xmas period.

It's all good in my eyes, as the more uninsured drivers they pull, the less chance they have of hitting your vehicle and not being able to pay for repairs.

Rozzers only pull people over due to the manner of their driving, or the results of checks that they have already done, trust me.

Was the bridge near Gretna that you got points by any chance?

Further up nearer Lockerbie IIRC, though there are umpteen places where they can sit over that stretch.

Anyone who uses that road regularly during the day and speeds will get caught sooner or later. I think it's one of the few stretches of motorway I'm aware of that has vans in them.

Garage List
Get a few operations like that round here

Police turn up en mass and use ANPR motorbikes marked cars etc. Thankfully they're more after the uninsured unregistered known offenders etc.

The rationale being that outlaws won't stick to the rules of the road either. Speaking to alocal beat officer where I used to work stated that as well as motoring they caught several burglars ,one of which was still carrying his loot in the back of the car and seized an assortment of weapons.

Don't mind that sort of operation in all honesty - think it's worth doing.

I think if the officers nose twitches they can stop you, after all how are you going to argue with them.

I used to get stopped all the time when I was young, we'd go for hoons in the Dales late at night and they'd chase us and when they'd caught up , tell us to go home etc....

Ah the good old days....

I would have contested that, and gone to court. They usually allow 10% + 3mph which is 80 mph. They allow 10% + 3mph in a 30 zone. Either that of the Police up there have different rules.

ACPO guidelines are 10% +2, but exceeding a speed limit by any amount is an absolute offence.

I would still try my luck in court... I have been told many times, also have a good friend who is a traffic cop, that they always allow 10% + 3mph, weather permitting. I managed to get off a speeding offence on the M62 many years ago due to an incompetent traffic officer.
