RWD 435 in winter in Montreal
Hello, every one. I live in Montreal. I am considering to buy a RWD 435. Will that be very difficult in winter even with winter tires? Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

My 2012 F30 328i RWD had no issues at all three winters in a row with winter tires on. If you just exercise regular caution and some common sense, you should be ok.

yes, get the RWD. Put winter tires on and enjoy the car. Worst case scenario: If you get stuck somewhere in the winters, simply figure out a way to take the car out. At 30, you'll avoid any reckless stunts anyways during winter so you should be good. You'll enjoy RWD more.
FYI I was told there are no more 4-series RWD coming to Canada for 2016. I guess that was for gran coupe than coupe. |

Thanks for your reply
Thanks a lot for your input. The resell value is also a concern. I will think about it.

Thanks for your advice
Yes, I noticed for 2016, BMW no longer offer RWD in some models. Kind of sad. For me, I like the fun of RWD. But in winter, I dont have such experience. Probably, in downtown area, it would be not an issue. Also, I will only use this vehicle no longer than 3 years. I should consider the resell value. I will think about it.

How do you think of this deal?
Actually, there is one 2014 used 435 coupe I am pretty interested. It s a RWD. Although I prefer AWD. Could you give me some comments of this deal? Great appreciate your help. I also dont know how it would be troublesome if buy vehicle from Ontario.

I have a budget of around 30K for 3 years driving. For now, near montreal, I did not find BMW 435 coupe with blue exterior and few packages in stock. Although there is one in one store, but this car is fully loaded with MSRP over 70K. I was expecting 8-9 % discount with cash in one-time payment of 36 months, but they only give me 3-4%. So now I am considering a used one. Actually, if the price of 435 exceed 70K, I would prefer M4 basic model.

435 for Montreal -- a few suggestions
Quote:
I have lived in Montreal and various other cities and have owned RWD and AWD 3-Series and 5-Series. I currently own a 535xi and an Estoril Blue 435xi coupe. Here's a quick response to your recent posts: 1. The 435xi coupe is a fantastic vehicle. It is not a sports car and is not as 'nimble' as earlier-generation 3-Series sports coupes, but it is a powerful, comfortable, well-built, authoritative coupe with a sporting personality. 2. I have owned RWD BMW coupes living in Montreal and Calgary, where you encounter real winter weather. I now live in Toronto, where one might seriously consider looking for a RWD 435 (which are rare). Given Montreal's snow and cold winters, THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD CONSIDER ANYTHING BUT THE XDRIVE VERSION!! Under normal (dry) conditions, it is very difficult to tell that my 435 has AWD. I suppose if you drive VERY aggressively on winding roads, an expert driver would notice a difference. In real-world conditions, the 435 xDrive will feel just fine. The difference in winter will be ASTOUNDING! A 435xi with winter tires will drive up Peel Street after a 5-inch snowfall with no drama! A RWD BMW will get there (if you're a good driver), maybe. But why would you want that hassle when 95% of 435s in Canada are xDrive? Resale value will also be an issue. 3. If I were buying a brand new, Current Model year 435xi, I would expect to negotiate at least ~4% off MSRP. At least. A 2015 M/Y BMW is no longer the current model -- 2016 M/Y cars have been on dealer lots for a few months. You should be able to negotiate a more substantial discount, since dealers will want to clear their 2015 vehicles from inventory. 4. You should check Autotrader.ca and the BMW Canada website to see what 2015 435xis are available. You could consider buying out-of-province, provided that you can save, say, $4-8,000 compared to what's available in YUL. A car can be shipped alway across Canada for perhaps $1,100-1,400. ( a guess, based on past experience) 5. Personally, I would consider buying a 2015 or even a 2014 with light mileage, but only from a BMW DEALER. Dealers in the Toronto area will have new 2015 and 2016, demo and used 435xi cars in stock. Buying a BMW in Toronto ("GTA") is, if anything a positive since a Toronto car with 8,000km has run on smoother roads and has seen little snow or salt, compared to a YUL vehicle that's been driven several months. 6. A new, or nearly new 435xi will remain an excellent, reliable vehicle for several years (easily, 5-7 years). Right now, BMW Canada offers attractive (0.90%) finance rates over terms of up to 60 months on purchase transactions. You should be able to arrange a 'Balloon payment', so you aren't paying off 100% over the 60 months. Whatever you do, don't accept a 2015 M/Y car on the basis of a 3-4% discount! Hello, friends, really appreciate your comments and advice, they are really very helpful.
Actually, I also prefer XDrive, and I am looking for a good deal on a 435 Xdrive. But recently, I did not find any with a good price. In the meantime, I noticed one RWD version, I think it is well priced, see the following link. http://www.autotrader.ca/a/BMW/4+Ser...&orup=40_15_50 Maybe I should keep looking for a XDrive version. I guess it also depend of your commute. If you have to park on the street in downtown area or climb many snowy hills X-drive is a no brainer. Otherwise you can probably get away with rwd.

+1. this topic has been discussed to death in the forums and while i agree montreals winters is a bitch, rwd with winters will do the job in a metropolitan city where major roads are usually cleared with some sort of regularity.

2nd 335i RWD, and still enjoy every minute of it. Good winter tires and you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for your info, Sir. I already bought a RWD one month before. More than 10% is really a huge discount, considering Canadian dollar is losing value during the past several months.
