About to fit new carpets (waiting for Boxing Day sale at Carpetright) but gonna source underlay seperately. (we have 8mm rubber at present and it ain't quite got the luxurious feel we're after )

It seems PU Foam appears to be a viable option these days http://www.underlay4u.co.uk/carpet-underlays.html

At a third of the price it merits consideration. Given it's just the feel and longevity that matter aside from cost anyone got this? or should I go good old rubber

Yep get the best you can afford. Rubber crumb type is generally thought to be best. A good underlay will make you carpet last longer and look better.

Yeah, but it looks like Carpetright (who pretty much dominate the market) only seem to do PU Foam which makes me think Foam must be acceptable. https://www.carpetright.co.uk/underlay ...albeit at 3 times the price from internet suppliers.

I always get it sourced on the net. Carpetwrong will have your pants down on price and quality. There are loads of suppliers on the net.

Agree with others. Get the best they offer - we did! But be prepared, you may need to shave a bit off the bottom of your doors as it can add a bit of overall height!

Suggest you go to an Independant carpet retailer - you'll find that they will sell the top notch underlays at a far lower price

As mentioned Carpet Right will pull your pants down properly on all the accessories such as underlay gripper strips glue etc

Thanks for the replies all - I agree. Going to get Tredaire Red (11.4mm rubber).

Can get it online for a good price.

Even their gripper rods are loads cheaper.

TBH though I will visit an independent as Kal001 suggested first. I've never done that before, but do normally try and support local independents.

This is what we used for our entire house, bought it online after getting various samples. Our fitter recommended it, saying it's used in banks and shops etc (areas of high footfall)

We have Tredaire Dreamwalk 11mm, awesome compared to the traditional rubber underlay. Very easy to handle and lay, I bought it and laid myself so all carpet fitter had to do was fit the carpet.

A cheap underlay will make an expensive carpet seem cheap.
An expensive underlay will make a cheap carpet feel expensive

We got carpet from CR but bought our own underlay, better stuff than CR offered at a 1/3 of the price!

Do people actually lay carpets themselves?

With decorating and stuff, I buy in the stuff I want, wallpaper, tiles paint etc and then have a professional (who I know) do it for me. Just workout a decent rate etc

We bought treadaire dreamwalk to do our new house, ended up just using it in the bedrooms as we found it too soft, and sold off the remaining rolls. Fitted all our living areas with rubber crumb system 10, much nicer to walk on in my opinion, I wouldn't fit PU again.

Same here recently finished the house and upstairs did Tredaire Dreamwalk 11mm Underlay everybody comments house plush the carpet is. Even though its standard carpet right but underlay just gives it that soft feel. In bedrooms used 5mm recycled wool underlay mainly for sound insulation not as soft but works wonders for sound and heat insulation.

Our fitter also said rubber crumb was much better for carpets with joints as there is not so much movement as there is with PU, so if you are going to have a join that is something else to consider. The PU certainly feels soft and luxurious, I just found it too soft for my liking, also you don't get near so bad furniture marks with the firm underlay.

We also got ours delivered from the net along with gripper and tape, company was called tradeprice and as we had whole house to do it was much cheaper than we could have got local.
