Question Remote car starter?

Ive been looking into if it were possible to DIY a remote car starter. I have been researching and it looks like there are some plug and play kits out there. ( http://www.amazon.com/Idatastart-ADS.../dp/B00R1Y0FFI )

Has anyone done this and if so any advice or recommendations? I have a 2011 328xi automatic.

I installed a viper 5904 about 4 years ago using the dlpk and kibmw. It was simple to install. Not sure about that kit, but I wouldn't use the stock remote it only works if you are standing 5 feet way from the car. The viper remote works up to a mile away and smartstart works anywhere you have wifi.

I just installed the ADS-BM1 along with compustar drone mobile and it's by far the best remote starter i've used. It's completely plug and play with zero wiring splicing required. Only took about 20 mins to install. The newer kits come with 2 long range remotes (one 2-way and 1-way remote) that's good for up to 3000ft.

The only thing you need to buy extra is the ADS-USB cable so that you can flash the ADS-BM1 module with the correct firmware so that it works with your specific vehicle.

There are definitely other remote starters that offer more features but be prepared to splice into the cars existing wiring. With how finicky bmw electrical systems are, I wasn't willing to go this route. Since it's plug 'n' play, you can simply unplug everything and resell the unit if you ever sell your car.

bmw325i how difficult was the install? How long did it take you and was there a need to splice factory wiring?

This is exactly what i am also worried about, i didn't want to splice the cars wiring. Any complaints or tips you can share? Also where did you purchase yours? Seems extremely expensive ~$700.

Definitely on the expensive side for remote starters but it was worth it to me because it's completely plug 'n' play and don't have to hack up the cars existing wiring. When I sell my car, I can simply unplug the module and sell it to recuperate some of the costs. I had a viper 5901 installed on my old car that I didn't bother uninstalling because all the wires were soldered on and would have been a huge hassle to remove correctly.

No complaints with the unit so far. Starts up every time with either the OEM key fob, supplied remote, or via the drone mobile app on my phone. Takeover is easy as you just have to unlock the car and press on the brake.

I purchased mine from a Canadian retailer in Toronto.

I've read of users remote starting their car via key fob then driving off without the key fob in the ignition, basically having comfort access feature. Can you confirm ?

I'm sure this feature alone would spark interest

This same person also mentioned testing the security feature by leaving a window open and unlocking the door without the key fob and the vehicle did shut off.

Yes, you don't need to insert the key into the ignition. Just unlock, press the brakes and go. '

The car MUST be unlocked via the OEM key, supplied remote, or via drone app or else the car shuts off as soon as the brakes are applied.

Can't think why any one would need this. Warm up the car before getting in?

Hey, looks like you went to lockdown for your work. Jeff is a great guy, did my dad's remote start too.

Is your car auto or manual? What did it cost after labour? Having a hard time finding something that will work with 6MT

Not sure where you live, but winter is COLD! Why freeze in the car waiting for it to warm up when you can have it be Ready for you when you get to it?

We do these fairly regularly. Straight forward and non evasive. Typically paired with a remote and/or phone app (Drone). We just had a guy from your neck of the woods in recently with his X5.

The only connections to the car are power, ground, 2 CAN wires, and 2 brake wires. It took a day or 2 the biggest problem being the lack of room in the dash. I ended up pulling out all the unused wires from the viper harness. Since the kibmw and dlpk use d2d that ended up being most of them. I'm not concerned about going back to stock at this point because it would be too much effort and I don't have all the pieces .

Anyone know if there's a plug and play one for manual transmission?

siphor1989 Just to make sure. You have an automatic. You do NOT have the comfort access. You then installed the module. You remote started your car with phone app while car was locked. And now all that is needed is to unlock the car with your phone drone app, step on the brake, drive off. NO key needed at all?

If that's the case. I am buying this now. Do you have a video?
Also how is it plug and play? Does it plug into obd-II?

No comfort access and automatic. After the car is remote started, you have the choice of unlocking it via the drone app or factory key fob. Once unlocked, you have 40 secs to perform the "takeover procedure" by pressing on the brakes. No need to insert the key fob into the slot.

The remote starter comes with a harness that plugs into the cars existing connectors.

Thanks for the follow up siphor1989 Are you able to remote STOP the car if you remote started and changed your mind?

Can you also extend the 40 seconds to something longer?

What were all the modules you had to buy?

Yes you can remotely turn off the car.

You can easily program the remote starter to extend the takeover procedure.

I bought the idatastart BM1 kit and the only thing extra you need is the usb adapter to program the module itself. If you want the drone mobile app capabilities, then you need to get the drone add-on module.
