Clearcoat coming off of wheels
I have an F30 sport line and the a big piece of clearcoat is coming off of one of my wheels. I have an appointment next week to have it fixed, the adviser said they would send them off to be refinished. Last night I looked at the other 3 and they all have the clear coat coming off to a certain extent and I fear they will have the same issue at some point. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue? I'm thinking BMW should warranty all 4 and replace them.

I have only had the car for 2 months (it was a CPO) and I wash it myself using the same car wash soap and mit I use on the car.

In that case I'm pretty confident those wheels were refinished poorly. I've never seen a factory finish fail like that. It also appears that the original clear is still there and still glossy which would be why it's coming off...

Thanks, it didn't occur to me that they may have already been refinished. Hard to imagine why on a CPO vehicle but regardless they are going to take care of it because it shouldn't have been certified without that being fixed or replaced.

If the car has been local it's whole life the same refinisher will probably get the wheels again. |

Well since it was CPO either the dealer or previous owner probably had the wheels sent to be refinished.
Most dealers have a wheel repair company that they keep on call and unfortunately most of them are just looking for quick and easy fixes. Tell the dealership that you want them fixed properly, whole wheel sanded down and painted and cleared and then the clear allowed to bake on.

Factory finishes are just as prone to failing as aftermarket. It has to do with prepping the area before hand or the mixture of clear verses hardner.

A failure of an OEM wheel in this manner is not at all common. In this case, given that it's a CPO car, I feel it was a quick and dirty refinish without proper prep.

Not normal. I have the same wheels that are 2 years old now and no such problems. They even see a couple of weeks of road salt each year when I am late changing over to winters...like this year

The way most shops apply powder, it will be difficult to evenly and completely cover a wheel like a factory finish. the Wheel oem has special application equipment designed to paint the varied surfaces of a wheel. it's going to take a skilled shop to do it right.

Can automatic, touchless car washes cause this? Perhaps the spray to the wheels might be too hard? I just noticed a wheel very similar to op’s pic - only one wheel but it bugs me a lot now that I’ve spotted it. Car was a slightly used 2015 F30 N55 w m sport package in otherwise great condition. Unsure if this was already there or not - just another lesson to carefully examine every detail before you buy and take pics as well. What’s a 19” m sport wheel repair run? Typically cheaper than a new one? |
