Share your OBD time-speed data on ice/snow?
Hi All,
I wanted to reach out to the community and ask a huge favor. Is there anyone out there that has used an OBD data logger on their car and recorded speed (not GPS speed) vs time when spinning their wheels on ice and/or snow? I know this is an odd question. I'm wanting to study what's how fast the wheel is moving when it's slipping on ice or snow. I'd collect the data myself but don't expect to see snow (if any) until January or February. I know the speedometer reports the speed of the wheels but I'm particularly interested in the speed-time relationship, i.e. how fast the wheels reach a given speed when slipping vs normal dry pavement. If you have some data like this from a data logger and are willing to share, I'd really appreciate it. If you have snow around you and want to try an experiment, do so at your own risk and PLEASE be safe. Thanks! |

What exactly do you want to measure? It sounds like slew rate of speed with pedal down on dry pavement vs slew rate of speed with pedal down on snow.
Of course, with traction, you'll get the real acceleration of the vehicle, where without, you'll get an acceleration not mathematically related to any parameters of the vehicle (torque, mass, etc). But of course, you'll also get different results based on your process. You could break traction on dry pavement with a power break or clutch dump, although I'd expect to see a slower speed slew rate in that case than on snow. Anyway, I probably will drive on snow this year, but it'll be with chains and may not be for a while. You can make a datalogger with a $10 elm327 bluetooth adapter and torque or dashcommand, but you probably already know that . Mostly, I'm curious why you ask.
