if they're auto-leveling, that sounds like a sensor issue. if they're manual, it's a bit of a pain in the ass to figure out where they should be, but the actual adjustment is simple.

I just got a new headlight (car was hit in the parking lot at work) and had to re-adjust the new one myself. Took all of 30 seconds. Pop the hood. Look on top of the headlight. There should be a hold with a white knobby looking thing deep down. Use a screwdriver (forgot if it's flat or phillips) and turn it (also forgot if CW or CCW is up/down lol).

Xenon or halogen?

I have the Xenon headlights and when you start the car, it rises up to level. However, I still thinking it shines too low for the speed I drive. Did you set the "default" level higher?

I have xenon/HID. I had to adjust the replacement headlight to aim higher.

I think (I say think because at present its only a theory) I have the opposite problem, whilst driving at night I keep getting people flashing me, at first I just put this down to going uphill etc and perhaps my lights being at a angle that is bright to others but it's happened quite a lot recently and it doesn't matter what angle the car is at it seems some other drivers think I have my high beam on!!

I have however lowered my car so I wondered if that would have made the difference?

So I'd be interested to see how I can adjust them myself

Something I would look at is the headlight sensor. When I had my car lowered on coils I noticed that when I started my car and the lights tried to auto level they would just bounce around for a few seconds. When I took my car in to get aligned, the tech told me my headlight sensor was installed reversed. After he re-positioned it my headlights auto align as normal.
