Nationwide Smart Ride

Does anyone have one of these Smart Ride things in their car? I recently purchased a 2012 335i and at the same time switched from State Farm to Nationwide. They gave me a 5% discount for trying it but I haven't gotten any more than that. I have driven past midnight like once, I work from home so other than weekend road trips I don't drive much and it still says both of those are more than the average driver in my state.
Even trying to drive without quick starts and stops I still set the damn thing off. This thing is either way too sensitive, the requirements for a discount are out of reach or both. Was just wondering if anyone else has had better luck.

Probably not meant for BMWs, much less a '35i. My rate would probably go up if I drove to my likings.

The last thing I want to do is have my insurance carrier monitoring/logging my driving habits.

Well I figured between working at home and being a responsible adult that doesn't close bars down anymore I could at least hit 2 of the 4 criteria and get a partial discount. I'm just frustrated that you apparently have to never drive your car to qualify for the average miles portion of the discount.
They talked me into this thing because 1 - you get a 5% discount just for trying and they say they won't raise rates based on the data and you can keep the 5% and 2 - it has no GPS so they don't track where I go, just miles driven, not that I care anyway.

I definitely see the enticement, just not for me. It plugs into the OBDII port, correct? If so, they can see EVERYTHING you do while driving, not just miles covered. While they claim they won't use it against you, I find that claim suspect. How could they NOT classify you as a "risk" if you accelerate full throttle from every stop and routinely stop with full braking. Just my .02.

Agreed. I can't say I bought a BMW to drive in the relaxed manner these devices usually require to get any sort of discount.

I have contacted my insurance agent and told them the device is inaccurate and the thresholds to receive a discount are unrealistic. The weekly emails telling me how "bad" my driving is are just aggravating me and I want to send send the device back.

Progressive wanted to give me a dongle to plug into the ODBII port so that i would receive a 5% discount over what i currently get. which would work out to like 12.00 USD for three vehicles and three people. I thought about it a minute and quickly told her "nevermind" ill just pay the higher amount. There is something intrusive about waving my privacy in lieu of a couple bucks per vehicle. I can see it now. "Well Mr so and so we know you were only doing 5 miles per hour when you got rear ended but why were you doing 130+ earlier in the day?" Nawww ill passs.

I have to agree - those spying devices are intrusive and an invasion of privacy. As long as I don't get tickets or have accidents, how, when, and where I drive is none of their damn business!

There is no way in hell I will ever be caught dead with this device in my car... And a 5% discount? That's nothing... At 50% people may start to notice.

I agree. I own 7 vehicles, and the total savings across the "fleet" is less than $50 every 6 months for me.

It hardly seemed like it was worth the effort to me...

Perhaps it makes sense for drivers who fall within higher risk groups...

Just not me... 61 and only one moving violation, when I was 17. I realized even then that I didn't like paying speeding tickets...
