Just be Happy You Don't Pay British Prices
I came across the BMW UK website this evening after a search for specifications on OEM wheels. I took two minutes to 'build' a British version of my car -- a 435Xi coupe with a wide range of options. The price? At least UK Pds 43,250.
At the current CAD exchange rate (2.03) that equates to C$87,800. With the 20% VAT payable in the UK, the on-the-road cost would be C$105,400! And that car is a RWD 435i (I don't think XDrive is offered on the 435 in Britain) Options are expensive. For example, the sunroof is Uk Pds 895 or C$2,180 with VAT! You can understand why most 3/4-Series cars in the UK are four-cylinder gasoline or diesels. Enjoy your savings. |

The prices in the UK are showing including VAT. If you take a look at the UK forum, you'll see that they also regularly get discounts of around 20% or more. The engine sizes you see in the UK are more to do with the company car tax incentives. Many employers provide cars for their employees, and there is a "benefit-in-kind" tax for this that is linked to the levels of CO2 produced by the vehicle.

UK prices

I was simply quoting list prices. And the prices shown were correct -- VAT is calculated properly, without double-counting. I am aware that the British market tends to be influenced by tax treatment, company car policies and fuel prices. But the intent was simply to show a simple illustration, purely for interest. That illustration stands. One could specify that the comparison is applicable only to individual purchasers and does not reflect price discounts applicable in either country. That should satisfy relevant legal requirements. |
