N55 surely is one hell of an engine
i was having some late night snack with my friends and on my way back to home on freeway when a mustang and an accord (i know right?) were racing side by side so i followed them.
The 2 in front were making a lot of noise for sure but werent showing much progress so i just thought what the hell and turned my car into a sports mode. I just went passed them like how bmw passes hondas and fords... later on the mustang came back this time with a 370 on the side, but the story didnt change much. i mean okay, accord, maybe is nothing but mustang and 370? this is one hell of a credit bmw should be getting. i am impressed by how the engine goes. |

So just from the perspective of what produces more HP/TQ from the factory?

+1. It's not a totally fair comparison, but my 240HP rated N20 is better than my 270HP rated Altima with the exception of off the line, where the displacement and lighter weight (by 600 pounds) of the Nissan gives it a slight edge. In the all important 50 to 80MPH passing acceleration the N20 beats the Altima.

Was it a 5.0 Coyote driven Mustang? If so, it has a ~100 HP advantage (everyone knows the N55 produces more than 300 HP) over the 435 and despite it being 200 lbs heavier, should pull on the 435 during a highway roll.
As for the Datsun and its antiquated VQ37, yeah....it's toast.

I believe the N55 actually makes about 325 hp and 335 lbs ft and it has a great power band

An engine is basically an air pump with lots of little holes drilled in it. At low RPMs the holes are too big and high RPMs the holes too small. In practical terms this means that at a certain RPM range, the engine hits peak torque. Before the range, torque still increases, but after, it falls. If the torque band can be widened then you have a car that can keep pulling for a longer period of time. As a made up example, let's say you have a car with a 4000 RPM band (with less power) and one with a 2500 RPM band (and more power). Now lets say they both hit peak torque at 1500RPM, both cars are increasing their power and still accelerating. But now the car with the 2500 RPM band hits 4000 RPM and has no more gears. Max torque starts to fall off despite having more power (i.e. the power is being wasted). The car with the wider band can still keep pouring on the torque until 6500 RPM. Now, 6 sp vs 8 sp transmission. That car with the 8 speed is going to have 2 more gears to stay in the power band. Combine that with the fact that a high compression engine (i.e. turbo) does better with slower burning fuel (i.e. high octane) and another advantage is added. More gears, wider band, it makes a big difference. Of course, if you have a 100HP turbo vs a 300 HP NA, well, no engine trick is going fix that. But you have a 230 hp vs 300 hp engine, yeah, you can get better performance throwing every engine trick there is at the problem. |

I would rather have almost any other v6 engine on the market than the VQ37. Nissan/Infiniti has really lost its appeal to me
