Recirculated air mode - physical principle?

The recirculated air control has a mode where, quoting the manual, "...a sensor detects pollutants in the outside Air and controls the shutoff automatically."

How does it detect pollutants? Possibly a photocell which detects small particles?

Not sure about smells, but it works pretty well for particulate matter such as smoke. I have noticed it a few times when vehicles discharged plumes of black smoke and I didn't smell it in the cabin.

Has a 'sniffer' sensor. There is a range of pollutants that it senses. I'm sure I've got the data somewhere on file, I'll see if I can find the list when I've a few spare minutes.

This is the basic detection list.

Quote:
The AUC II sensor has the ability to detect:
• Carbon Monoxide (CO)
• Hydrocarbons (HC)
• Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx gasses).
I've seen a more detailed listing at the dealer, thought I had a copy. If I do find it, I'll add the detail.

Does the range accuracy get better as nostril separation increases, so it might work well for one person but not another?

Thanks HighlandPete, that's interesting - didn't know it would do all that. Guess we don't have to worry about NOx if stuck in traffic behind a slow moving VW.

Cool! I guess the EPA could've used our BMW's climate control to test those VW TDI diesel engines for pollution.

Now I wish BMW would come up with a sensor to detect interior odors and somehow prevent the rest of the passengers having to smell it (especially after a trip to Chipotle).

well i think my sniffer is a bit more sensitive than the cars cause i still smell the garbage dump, the brush fires, the diesel trucks exhaust and sometimes farts i think. Wait scratch the last one that might be me.

If you don't have any windows open, then you really don't have any fresh air at all. You may be fine for a short 10 min drive, but if driving say for an hour like that (and especially if you have a few passengers), then hypoxia will start setting in and while you may not suffocate, you will feel increasingly lethargic.

So, no. Not a good idea.

Mercedes and BMW both have a perfume system integrated with the cabin climate control.

You can have a lovely violet scent mixed with your Chipotle burrito. No air freshener can top that.

You need to get fresher air in regularly....
You dont want to smell your own fart on recirculation...

I dont tot in my car... And i always have the fresh air in.... Except when i see a dump truck ahead then i manually put in recirculate.... No bad smell

Actually the manual mode will be overridden after some time automatically to avoid just that. At least that was the case in all my previous cars.
