G12 at Carino Provisions Tonight

Trunk space with the spare is also beyond comical; even less than what the picture portrays; note how the floor is flush with the edge of the bumper...

Surprised how soon the G12's have arrived; thought late-November, but dealer has three. Spent time in an Individual and noted the following:

One of the most beautiful parts of the car are the side view mirrors, but they have a flaw; they're positioned so low that their view is partially obstructed from the driver's seat! Nothing to do with mirror angle, but the housing itself. New rear view mirror is gorgeous too.

What's with the glove compartment 'shelf'. Nothing to the glove compartment now and something's bound to get caught / kinked in the area that dips. No chance of reaching the pen clips either. Also unfortunate that the hidden compartment behind the wood has been removed. Annoying new, unreachable position of trunk lock switch to boot.

As with the interior as a whole, cup holder area design is a step backward. Very budget. HATE clutter and will never store anything in plain sight next to the ash tray. New cigarette lighter position is sad; not hidden, as before, and what if liquid spills on same? USB socket position wrong too; should be out of sight and more discrete.

Love addition of a cover / door to the rear cigarette lighter sockets. Why fully exposed the front one now I have no clue.

Panel that moves when the rear armrest is pulled down does not allow comfortable use the iPad-like controller while docked. Option is gimmicky vs. adjusting controls via actual buttons, but crazy that can't be comfortably used when docked.

Door card storage bins are unbecoming of a luxury car; they're SUV-like. Loved how the F01/02 door bins allowed content to be secure and out of sight; whether an umbrella, mace or a stack of money, same could previously be kept safe and neat. Keeping anything on the doors of the new 7 would be an eyesore now.

Additional items:

Plastic parts color coded to interior color are not a plus, but remind me of electric and light switch faceplates novicely painted wall color.

Less business-like steering wheel design.

Engine compartment employs greater amounts of insulation that reduce direct injection engine noise emitting from same.

Interior lights are insanely bright and blinding; improper positioning directed right at you; nonadjustable as well.

In addition to cheesy faux buttons now used, remaining actual, physical buttons are now more flush with each other and more difficult to use, especially those surrounding the iDrive controller; why!? New gear shift design is less elegant.

Why do the rear seat bottoms feel like they are so high? No adjustment to lower further.

Superior floor mats!

Even more shallow rear 'map' pockets on front seatbacks; why!?

Dealer made mistake of placing F02 side by side with G12; F02 front and rear having FAR greater presence. Front and rear of G12 are more feeble, less imposing and less BMW-like. New kidney grill sits lower.

BMW Individual wheels are FINALLY forged, salesmen stated they will not bend, but crack if anything. Prefer design of my Style 301 wheels; wish they were forged.

Navigation screen smaller? Seems so, but can't tell...

Just one comment about the navigation screen, I believe it 10.25", slightly bigger than the 10.2" in the f01 and f10.

Additional observations:

Nice that the audio power button icon doesn't rotate when turning the knob now

Seat belt tensioners are more intuitive as they tension upon vehicle movement, not upon buckling

Rear window shades seem quieter (but slower) and now able to raise the side shades without lowering the rear shade first if previously raised

Prior vertical layout of the main iDrive menu was easier to read vs. looking side to side with the new main menu (i.e.: www.spritzinc.com)

Again, side view and rear view mirrors are gorgeous, but as nice as the rear view mirror design is, in use at night its border is not as frameless it initially thought; annoying the edge of the mirror is a different color; drive the car at night and you'll see what I'm referring to.

Additional:

Specific door checks back with door stops at designated positions; prefer F01/02 ability to hold anywhere stopped.

The nav screen (CID) is actually much LARGER than the screen used in the F01 / F02. In the G11 / G12, it's 12.3" The upright housing it's in with the two vertical dead-areas on either side probably makes it appear smaller.

I think you're wrong.

First, I sat in a G12 a few days ago, and the screen did not appear as big as 12.3", I think the difference between 10.2" and 12.3" would be really noticeable.

Second, in the German pricelist is says this about the screen (translated to english): 'Fixed Control Display, 10.25", with touch function,
1440x540 pixel resolution incl. iDrive Touch Controller'

Correct, Parts system also conforms 10.25"

Read your review on another forum and I trust your opinions as they address "real world daily concerns". About the only thing this car has improved on is the interior to some degree. Otherwise it's a giant 3 Series IMO.

I pulled my information (12.3" CID) from the 'G12 Displays and Controls' documentation used for dealer service tech training. Must be a typo, because page 23 of the documentation reads: "The 12.3" Central Information Display (CID) in the G12 features touch screen operation as standard equipment and is thus an operating controller alongside the Controller. The CID has a resolution of 1440 x 540 pixels."

Additional:

Not aesthetically pleasing, but more ergonomic HVAC vent dials, as passenger side one now within driver reach. Note: the Mercedes W140 did this best; all four dials were center dash.

What's with the two totally different door grab designs between the front and rear door cards? Rear door cards have a gapping hole in the center for door grabs. Weird.

I'm thinking maybe they took all the negative feedback about the F01 / F02 door grabs a little to far, and overcompensated in the G11 / G12. In the F01 / F02, they're sooooo minimalist, and so well integrated, to the point they're unintuitive. People getting into the car for the first time can't find them. I can't tell you how many times I've had a "new" passenger (friend / family / business colleague) hop into the passenger seat of my car, then grope blindly for something (anything!) with which to close the door. I have to tell people 100 percent of the time where to grab so the door can be closed.

Although I do love the G11 / G12 (and am ordering in Jan '16), I still think the "hidden" and more integrated design in the F01 / F02 is somehow a lot less busy -- cleaner.
