SNOW tire sizing?

Hello everyone,
I have a 2014 6spd RWD 328i Sport with stock 225/45 18". I am debating on buying snow tires and rims from Tirerack but am unsure about which size to go with; Blizzak WS80- 225/50 17s or 215/55 17s. I don't want to sacrifice too much dry performance but considering the winters we've been having and rwd on the car I want the safest bet. Tirerack recommends 225/60 16". I'm not sure about that...

Any opinions or relay of experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Go with 225 if you don't want to sacrifice anymore dry performance than necessary. 225 will be narrow enough for New England winters.

If it was a dedicated snow car, then yeah go 215. But for me, it would be too much of a sacrifice of dry performance for the vast majority of the winter.

I previously ran Dunlop Wintersport M3 tires in 225/45R17 square on my old E36 M3. 225 handled the winters here just fine. Granted, that driving didn't include the last snowpocalypse winter, but I don't think it would have been different.

If you're nervous, then just keep a set of those textile snow "chains" in your trunk for the couple of days where it looks bad on the roads. The red ones fit 225/50R17

16 would be ridiculous looking (17's look pretty silly to me) and probably has no chance of fitting on your car and clearing your brakes.
