New exhaust smells like burnt rubber/plastic?

Dealer just replaced the stock exhaust for my 335i with 27k miles yesterday. It now has a really strong burnt rubber/plastic smell while and after driving. Is this normal?

I asked my SA about it and was told to give it another day and to contact him ASAP if the smell is still there.

I dont have any exhaust mods like catless dp or anything.

Seems really strange to me since after I installed an MPE on my last 328i, I didnt notice this smell at all.

I got this too, but this is caused by Gun-Gum, which is putted into the gaps before mounting the exhaust. It also prevents exhaust gas vents outside. This smells the first 3 days a little like overheated brakes, but when then the smells are not gone I would contact your SA again.

Ah. I see. Wish they had told me about the Gun-Gum stuff...And yes, overheated brakes is exactly how it smells; I actually thought it was my rear calipers not releasing.

Thanks for sharing!

yep, the guys at fabspeed told me the same thing. that new exhaust components always have an odor for the first few days. completely typical. you might also notice some dark dust/residue around the back of the car. just give her a wash after a week or so. enjoy!

in my experience there is a burning oil type smell that usually happens 1 or 2 heat cycles. Burning rubber or plastic isn't how I would describe it. Guess someone could of left on some protective plastic or something.

Most new exhausts, even aftermarket smell.

Have you inspected underneath the car?
