Michelin Pilot Super Sport RF only at BMW?

Having the car for about 5 months, I just experienced my 2nd flat tire. This time around, its a big ol' nail too close to the sidewall to be replaced.

I have the Michelin Pilot Super Sport run-flats that came stock from the dealership. I took the car to Discount Tire this morning and they told me they don't, and can't, carry the run-flat versions of that tire. Apparently Michelin has a special agreement with BMW where only they carry that version of the tire? Anyone know if this is true?

Discount tire told me my options are:

1) replace all the tires - don't wan't to do this with 3000 miles on the tires.
2) Take it to BMW - pay about $320 for parts and labor
3) replace the one tire with a Michelin PS2 run flat. Something tells me having a different tire than the rest on this car is a bad idea...

Is my option to get the same tire seriously only taking it to the BMW dealership?

I had the same problem on my 1 series. I had Pirelli p-zeroes on the car but the back tires wore way to fast. After going through two sets of pirellis I decided to do research for Michelin run flats but non of the tire shops I went to could get that tire in the specific oem size for bmw. Only bmw stoked them. Eventually I found one place that could get hold of slightly bigger non OEM Michelin super sport tire and I took those. Been over a year now and they still look new.

I don't think Michelin PSS that come with M235i are run flats. I have 2015 M235i with regular non-RF Michelin PSS tires and never even heard of RF option for that tire. I think you should double-check you tires.

Chk if TireRack had the PSS Zero Pressure.
The dealer pricing doesn't seem all that outrageous.

those Michelin Pilot Super Sport on the M235i are NOT runflat tires. If you want a RunCrap tires you need to go a different route.

Apparently Discount Tire confirmed it this morning when looking at the tire. My tire that went last last month didn't blow out on the highway so I took it to BMW (was right next door) and they confirmed it was a run-flat tire (had to special order it).

How do you tell its run flat? Only thing I see on the sidewall to maybe indicate it is 'michelin tubeless' 225/40 ZR 18 - 88Y

I don't necessary want run-flats, I want the same tire I have on all the other 3 wheels.

It's not awful, discount tire quoted me $240 out the door for the Michelin PSS, versus 310 at dealer (with detail...oo.)

Pretty sure bmw doesn't sell any MPSS run flats.

If you are certain of this can you please take a photo of your entire sidewall and post it on here.

MPSS runflats do exist but im pretty sure not in our fitments. I think corvette C6's used them or something.

This is a list of MPSS availablw specs. AS you will note none of the BMW ( Star Rated ) fitments come in runflat. Including the ones that fit our car.

I just got off the phone with NTB.

I see no indication on the sidewall that these tires are run-flats, no 'ZP', no 'RF'. So did both BMW and Discount Tire BS/be mistaken? I wasn't given a spare or a tire repair kit with my car, so I'm confused now.

The kit is under the floor in the trunk of your car, right next to the battery. Will include a small compressor and a can of fix a flat. But really you are supposed to just get it towed via BMW Assist.

I will note that most people at BMW dealerships are not aware that some of their cars do not come with runflats ( M/MPerformance cars). An example of this was them trying to sell me on tire puncture insurance when i bought my car as the "runflats on your car can cost as much as a thousand dollars to replace" lol. When i informed her my car didnt have runflats she argued with me saying every BMW has runflats.

Yup, just confirmed with my dealer (different dealer), they are not run-flats. So BMW of Austin service lied to me about it being a run flat. That clears that out.

Now new question. Tire companies around here only have the 225/40 - 18 92Y, and no the 88Y that are on my front tires. Will this make a significant difference if I put that tire on instead?

Someone said the difference between the 88 & 92 is sidewall stiffness. My dealer was able to order the front in a 88 in one day.

My pilot super sports have a star on the sidewall which I was told indicates run flat. I'm so confused over this as well bc some places wouldn't patch my tire when I had a nail in it

I believe the STAR represents a tire that is BMW specific ( like Michelin tires with MBZ on the sidewall which are tires that meet criteria which makes them ideal for Mercedes applications )

If a hole in the tire is not within the tread patterns circumference outter ribs / deep linear narrow spaces then they can't patch the tire. The nail penetrated too close to the sidewall and potential damage could be unsafe in situations.

I appreciate the clarification. Having discount tire, BMW Austin Service and initially my sales person at BMW San Antonio tell me they're run flats is annoying. The Discount Tire sales guy still denied they weren't run flats after we confirmed with multiple sources (including here).

I found the right tire and got it put on. Thanks.

ah... that makes sense. when i looked up on michelin site, they advertised their run flats as "zero pressure".

nail was in the middle of the tire, nowhere near the sidewall. eventually found a mom/pop place that patched for $20.

In case there's any remaining confusion on this, Michelin has never made any run flat Pilot Super Sport tires in any size for anyone...period.

That is just plain untrue, even michelines website listing the available specs ( which as I understand it isn't even the full list) says you are wrong.

Right at the top of their list there is 6 sizes available with ZeroPressure in GM OEM fitments.

Wow I guess I stand corrected. I was looking at Michelin's catalog just last night and didn't see that at all. I have the non run flat version on my SLK55 and love them, have been thinking of buying them (non RFT) for our Carrera 4S, and they are on the 235 (non RFT) that we are picking up in Munich in 2 weeks.
