connected Idrive same as tracker
Having owned a few bmw and soon to be getting f80 I have a question. After doing insurance quotes most insurance companies want a tracker fitted. Now I don't really see the need as with connected idrive you can pinpoint your car using the bmw app , and bmw concierge service can also pinpoint your location. Even when the ignition is off. And it is also a subscription service same as a tracker. My question is do I tell my existing insurance company I have a tracker as in reality I will with connected idrive ? And in my opinion it's surely the same, not really a lie but I also know that insurance companies will use any excuse not to pay out.
Just want a general response on people's thoughts. And if anyone agrees with my opinion. |

It's not the same as a tracker. You would be lying to the insurer and risk not getting your money back if it's stolen.

I found there was very little difference in quotes with and without tracker certainly nowhere near the yearly costs although that might depend on where you live.

Asked the same question just after the delivery of my F82
With regards to Tracker Approx £600 for install , Then £130 per year subscription , I was advised to pick insurance company that will not insist of a tracker being fitted , As if your car is stolen the thief will use and abuse you pride and joy , you will then get your pride and joy back Your car then is registered on a stolen car recovery database and it will devalue 30% , The best thing to go for is back to invoice + GAP insurance it cost me £300 for 3 years Go onto Autotrader website and purchase through them , spoke to my friend at the dealer I purchased my car from and was told to purchase as the BMW policy is £250 more expensive for a like for like policy |

Thanks wulsgm4 . It's not that I'm actually wanting a tracker. Just I'm wondering if it was just me who thinks surely it's the same. Always get the gap. And yeah ur right. I don't want it back if it gets stolen. Usually get bmw to match any online price so no brainer for the gap.

It is a scandal that BMW UK will not track a stolen car. It seems to me it is a racket to sell trackers in the UK. I would have thought BMW UK could be guilty of perverting the course of justice. If my car was stolen I would be asking the police to contact BMW UK for info on the location of the vehicle.

2015/6 cars now come with GPS tracking which can be activated in the menu. BUT anyone who knows can just deselect it. Making it US. Trackers today ( most good one's) are GPS and VHS, the VHS can't be easily blocked as all major services use it and blocking it shows the car/and area blocked, so the car is a beacon when this is tried.
