Insurance
Hey guys!
So I've been thinking of switching my insurance to a different state. Being that living in NY it's a bit expensive I wanted to switch over to FL insurance. Now my question is does the car need to be physically there to register it or can it be here and done a different way? Reason I chose FL it's because I have a house there but live in NY therefore I can use that address. Any help would be appreciated! |

The name for doing that is: "Insurance Fraud".
You'd have to register the car there, have a valid FL license, and valid FL address. And you might still get nailed and your insurance cancelled. |

It's popular to do a similar thing with Montana apparently because of taxes.. this article explains more why it's fraud:

Many years ago I was an insurance adjuster. It was grounds to decline the claim. If there were out of state tags we would get employment info. If they worked where the accident was and registered the car in another state the claim would be denied for fraud

Straight up insurance fraud. If you were to do it, you would have to get your car registered in FL, get an FL license, pass emissions & inspections in FL and run a very high risk of getting your coverage declined in an unfortunate event due to fraud.
Here's a word of advice from someone in the insurance industry - any time CA, NY, MI, FL are involved in a claim, you can bet that someone from the fraud team is looking at it because so much of this happens all the time... and you're 2/4. Don't do it man |

Yes, it's fraud. But insurance really doesn't care where the car is registered (in my experience). It cares where it is "garaged." We just moved from state A to state B, and I immediately changed the insurance policy although we haven't changed our registration yet. My car actually didn't move to state B and is still in state A for two more months until I finish a work assignment. I told the insurance company and they didn't seem to care.
If you were to do what you are saying, when you get the policy you will have to tell them it's garaged in NY, so you'll probably end up getting NY rates anyway. If you don't tell them, then good luck getting a claim approved. Now if your car actually spent most of it's time in FL and a minority of the time in NY, then sure you can change it. |

Now that makes sense. But being that it is fraud I highly doubt I'll be doing anything now. Thank you for that tho. |
