N54 Automatic Transmission flush
How many of you did an transmission flush after 100K miles? I was about to do mine but couple people mentioned that if you don't do it prior to 75K, dont mess with it as it causes more problem doing it after the certain mileage.
Does anyone have issues doing tranny flush after 100k? |

I have my appt for oil change and transmission flush this morning for my 08 E93 106k miles. I will let you know how it goes. Sometimes tranny is "slow" to engage in drive in the morning when you first start to leave. Anyone else experiencing that? Doesn't happen all the time but definitely sometimes? Not sure why that happens

Someone in my local group said that after the flush, it doesn't shift right during high rpm.
Almost as after so many miles on the tranny, the old fluid is what is holding the tranny together. Anyone have that issue? If not what fluid and package did u get? Did you do a tranny readapation? |

I have had the Trans fluid changed in my wife's 06 E90 325i every 50K miles from day one. Still has the original ZF auto trans with over 250K Miles on it and it still drives and shifts well.

There is a difference between flush and a simple drain and refill.
A drain and refill might only change 1/3 of the total oil in the transmission. A full flush needs to be done by a professional with the correct tools I believe.

yes thats correct I only did a drain. We were able to get 90% of the oil out. It took 6.5 liters of oil to fill it.

Got the flush today from Classic BMW in Cleveland. Cost $339 with tax after $50 BMW service coupon I received in the mail. Car seems to shift just fine. 106k and I have never done it before. I think I'm doing the power steering flush next service and just keep changing fluids throughout as I go. Car goes to the dealer every 8-10K for service

No readapation that I know of. I also run the Alpina transmission flash too. Picked up the car and went. Porter who brought my car around had the car in Sport mode when he dropped it off up front with gear shift to the left so he must have known it had a little something extra special

Everyone needs to be careful to NOT make 'drain' and 'flush' to be the same task!!!
'Drain' changes fluid, it is what BMW recommends at 100K intervals, and ZF recommends for the 335i engine A/T transmission at 60K intervals. 'Flush' is NOT recommended! Flush vs. Change A flush uses a professional grade machine to completely flush all the transmission fluid from your vehicle and to remove some grime and contaminants. This process runs a special solution through the lines until they come out completely clean and then fills up the system with new fluid. A change on the other hand simply drains it using natural gravitational forces. Not all the fluid in the system is drained using this method and it does not flush out contaminants. ZF says to put in a new pan with integrated filter in the ZF A/T for BMW. |

It isn't recommended to flush a high mileage transmission. Reason being the flush may well disturb steels or clutch material doing no harm and get stuck in a check ball causing the transmission to not operate correctly.
I do only drain and refill except when there are sufficient miles to do a pan change. I do this every 40K miles or so which based on the analysis done by Blackstone was too early. I would not be worried about getting a transmission flush at 50K miles as recommended by ZF in their PDF. I have posted that PDF elsewhere and I follow what the manufacture of the transmission recommended NOT what BMW recommended which used to tell us it was "lifetime" fluid. Your transmission your call but I would be extremely uncomfortable doing a flush at 100K miles given I have seen too many transmission start to slip a few weeks after the change. |

I flushed my original transmission fluid in my old Taurus SHO with 110,000. The Trans died about a month later. It started shifting REALLY hard soon after the flush and got progressively worse. Coincidental? Maybe. However I've started doing drains on higher mileage cars from then on.

That's what I was worry about too. So in my case of 100k. Just drain it and don't worry about the oil pan?
Thanks for the info. It was the response that I was looking for. What is the ZF? |

ZF is the manufacturer of our 335i transmissions, the 328i transmissions are GM

Cool. Thanks for the info.
When doing a simple drain, what kind of oil would you suggest? And is the oil pan and filter necessary to change out at my mileage? (100K) |

Harry, I did mine as you know and it works great. It slipped out of gear at the drag strip and now holds about 70hp more and no problems at all.
I ordered the Pan Fluid and mechatronic sleeve from ESC tranny kit. |

I just changed out the filter (pan) and did a drain and fill. I'm at 78K miles. The fluid was pretty dark. Also, when I pulled the pan I was surprised it still had a lot of fluid in it. I replaced about 6.5 quarts total. All in all it was a pretty simple job. Just a bit messy.

Does the ECS tuning kit include the mechatronic sleeve? Or it called "M18 transmission fill plug" included in the kit?
ECS tuning assembled the kit with VAICO transmission fluid. Is it recommended? For the pan and filter, should I go with ZF or Vaico? |
