1st Oil Change Issue

Bought my oil change kit from getBMWparts and as I was pouring the first three liters, my son noticed a different type of oil on the other four. It was 5W30, Longlife-01/gasoline/diesel that I first poured. The other four is 5W30, Longlife-04/Diesel. So I am stuck at this point because I do not have the right ones. I wished I had noticed this first thing before removing the old oil.

Does anyone have any recommendation for me? If "getBMWparts" was available when I called them, I would have some answer. Do you think it will be safe to use the "04/Diesel"? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

1Legit, I'm not at my home where I have the BMW branded oil bottles of both the Castrol and the new updated Shell oil for our 235. When I get home later I can view the bottles and snap a picture so you know what the bottles Frm the dealership look like.
Believe the part # should be 83212365946, but I need to double check.

Hey Scott, I know the first three of my oil was the correct ones, but since I don't have access to BMW's parts department near me. Is Castrol 5W30 LL-01 available at nearby auto shop? I'm a bit disappointed this was overlooked by the seller.

I would go to the Shell Pennzoil web site and use their OIL SELECTOR to find an oil.
Or the Castrol site and their OIL SELECTOR.

If your wot alot (track), you will see a higher engine oil temp, 0W-40 will operate closer to design specs than 5-30. Feels the same, nothing noticeable. no fuel consumption change.

Also better suited for warm climates, so 5w30 for you.

I grew up in Buffalo, so I know Toronto, you can run the 0w40 prob. 4-6 months a year if you wanted to.

LL-04 oil is a low/mid-SAPS oil and should really be used in areas with extremely high quality gasoline (Germany, Switzerland, etc.) and not the USA. It has a lower TBN, which means it will not protect as long with the poor gasoline we have in the US.

LL-01 oil is a High SAPS oil, with higher TBN, so it protects longer. If you change your oil more frequently than say the suggested 10,000 mile interval, like at 5,000 miles, you should be okay. However, how quickly the TBN breaks down depends greatly on your driving habits.

In your case, you could use it, but just need to leave this blend in for a shorter typical time period.

The sump is 6.5 liters / 6.9 quarts dry.

Buy 7 liters. Put 6 in at the time of the change. With residual holdup in the system, you should find the indicator at either 3/4 or Max after doing so. Put the 7th liter in the trunk.

Just did an oil change today. Mechanic says the 6 cyclinder takes about 6 litres. The N20 takes 5 litres. Just for info if you're changing your own oil.
