Golf Tee Modders-Info YOU NEED TO KNOW

Hopefully this is the correct section since its an exhaust mod.

So those of you who did the "golf tee mod" aka actuator mod by removing the spring and tying it with wire, there is something you need to know. For the people that just unplugged it no worries you guys are safe!

Well Ill get right to the point, if you don't want to ruin your actuator and a $100 part do NOT tie it off with wire. Unplug the actuator while its open and leave it. Here is why..

I did the mod and tied it off for a couple years its been like this. Well I recently put a JB4 on my car with OBD cable and wanted to control the flap from inside the car logically right as it would be cool to close it upon cold start since with a DP the car is loud.

Well I reversed the mod only to discover that the actuator was working, but it was not opening and closing the butterfly valve. Why? The gears inside have chewed themselves up. I opened up the actuator and it appears that on both the gears there is an over travel stop. This is that infamous I tried to put the spring back in to reverse the mod but the holes did not line up. For those of you that have done it you know what I am talking about. Well that is because its already on the over travel pin and over time it just chews away at it until the gears are ground up. You can see in the pics the gears are cracked off and both over travel pins are broken off.

So in conclusion is this a big deal NO the part is a 100 bucks. But to save everyone else the hassle and just for reference I thought Id share my find.

I went the same route as you but luckily was able to put the spring back in and now I'm controlling the flap with the JB4. I had the golf tee mod for about 6 months. Warranty will cover it. No?

My muffler is gutted and welded they will say something about it. I'm not fighting over a $100 part that I actually ruined.

I bought a completely stock muffler with an u modified actuator.

And what's crazy is I left the actuator completely off and unplugged and it DISABLED my JB4. I guess no open circuits huh?

You need to go the obdii route then its controlled with the button at the end of the turn signal lever.

What he said. It's $15 bucks for the cable. And I wanted a clean install with no tapping. The obd cable allows this to be possible I case I have to reverse it all.

Damn I have no idea what the OBDII cable is. I need to do some research. Is that the cable that you can purchase with the JB4 to attach it to the computer?

Yes it's $15. F30 OBD can cable

Instead of tapping to the can wires under the hood with posi taps (leaves traces) you connect the OBD to the jb4 instead and plug it tints your obd port under the dash. You can change maps with this as well, pretty much everything you can do with a lap top minus the firmware updates and logs.

You must update the JB4 however to the firmware on their web page. It explains it all.
