Which intake is right for and won't give a CEL?

I want to get an intake for my 335i and was looking at the BMS intake but have seen some people report having rough idles and even getting a CEL. I don't plan on tracking the car and just want an intake for the sound. Is there an intake that someone would recommend that hasn't given someone a CEL? My plans are to get a BMS stage 1 as well so my budget for an intake is a bit low. I prefer to spend less than $300.

Some intakes or air boxes I am looking at are:

Injen Short Ram intake
BMS intake
Afe magnum pro 5R (non-oiled)if I can get a good deal somewhere
the MPPK air box with either my stock filter or a drop in filter

Im a complete novice when it comes to intakes, so would a closed intake be better than an open intake?

I have the BMS intake and I didn't get a CEL for the most part. The only time I ever did was when I was driving in the windiest day of the year going against the wind at a pretty quick highway speeds in a cold night. I got a CEL for about a few days. I have a feeling its due to the MAF sensor going haywire due to the wind, after a drive cycle it reset itself.

This intake makes a great sound and adds to throttle response for sure. However it heatsoaks easily in the summer. I have it off right now and will probably put it back in the winter, I have a drop in filter right now. However, IMO the best intake the is the close AFE as it makes power and has better IAT but for more then double the cost, so you do pay for it. I might consider selling my BMS intake for 200 CAD if your local in Canada. let me know. If you want to spend less then 300 then your only real option is the BMS as its the most cost efficient one for a great sound and relatively easy install.

I live in Texas so it gets very hot here. Would that be a problem with the BMS intake? I'm assuming if it heatsoaks it would result in less performance?

I believe the injen intake is right around 300. Are the injen intakes decent?

I have the AFE Magnum and I LOVE it. Never had a single issue with it, and as you can see Im fully modded and in Houston so I know the heat. unfortunately for you, the place I ordered my intake from bumped the price up $200. I got mine when they first came out for about $250

I have the BMS without a single light ever coming on my dash. I liked the idea of running their tune along with their intake.

That's what I was thinking of too. I have the stage 1 and will be installed soon. But I've heard of only great things for Afe and I've heard BMS intake is a hit or miss with the light sometimes.

Tune generally is needed to void the CEL that keeps occurring while running the BMW intake

Would a stage 1 tune be sufficient enough?

I ran their intake without a tune initially without issues either.

Again, the Dinan intake actually has 10hp gains, makes lovely noises (not too obtrusive), and has no heat soak issues...I'm not sure why more people don't have it!

Isn't that $600? Out of my price range, but I just want it for sound and not performance.

From what I've researched, AFE is probably your best aftermarket option.

Believe or not, it is very rare to get CEL with any of these intakes. Compared to the number of people who bought these intakes from us, the number of complaints was less than 5%.
I like the BMS because it looks good and has an unbeatable price.
Check the vendor section for deals on these intakes and make sure to get it from a vendor that offers money back guarantee in case you get CEL.

I agree. CEL are rare and it only seems more pronounced because forums are only typically showing problem threads.

The injen appears to be the most popular intake purchased from us.
