Cool First Dyno: impressions...(528WHP)

I will start off that I was not completely impressed with the team and their performance. This was a car show on an American base where the host hired a German dyno team. I was told I got three pulls and I could adjust settings and watch the JB4 connectkit on my phone.

I was planning on building up to a target boost of 17 or 19/20.5/22 @ 4500 and @6500 dropping.

They told me not to warm the car up, well I wanted to ensure I was at least above 160 oil temp before they went off and slammed on the gas, so I ignored them and let it idle for 5-10 minutes while they set up.

They never asked me about the car until it was on the dyno and he was having problems and realized this might be AWD.

When the car was on the dyno ready to go they told me to stand about 50 yards away. I understand dyno's can be dangerous, but they are at an event which actually covers the insurance if anything were to happen and the host just shrugged.

The attached image is the first run at 17 or 19. I honestly cannot remember because the connectkit kept having problems since I had to keep backing away 50 yards and I drove in at 19 with some logs, but I tried to reset back to 17. I can only assume it didn't reset and I apologize for not paying more attention, but I figured the log I took would remind me; however, the delays between when I hit "Start logging" and the team actually driving was so delayed that the log was a useless...0/0. By delays, it took an hour to get 3 runs.

I did make sure on the second run to reset the values and double checked; however, I had to go straight to 21 psi, because they told me I only got one more run...the information about the third pull was only if one of the first two had slipping or problems.

That is the log is located ((http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32465)) on the post dated 1 Aug...which to my newB eyes looks pretty dang good. However, the car kept slipping. The team said my DSC kept kicking in. I asked if they knew how to turn it off or if they needed me to show them and they told me it was off. Which I am not completely sure is the case because when I got the car back I found the ASS was on again which can only mean they went out of comfort and into eco which is not the correct step.

They then did a third run, but I did not have time to reconnect my phone and hit start log, they said it was still slipping and would not work, I looked to see what the computer was saying and it was showing 788. I wish I could have gotten the picture for some good fashioned trolling, but they quickly closed the program and sent me on my way.

Overall, I am glad I did it, but do not think it was worth 100 Euros (90 Euros for dyno and $10 for show entry. I am glad I have evidence the car is over 500, sad it isn't a real good number as I don't have a solid log behind it to see where and what could have been improved, sad the 21 psi logged wasn't displayed or working, sad the dyno stopped at 5500rpm.

Well my advice is go to a local competent dyno shop, ask for a jb4 map0/4 baseline. Then do 3 pulls at different boost levels (17/20/22). At least you know what the car makes on stock boost and different settings.

Anyways at 20-21 psi you're breaching 500whp which is nothing to be ashamed of

True, I'm sure that would be cheaper but probably not as fun as driving to BR. The races in France going to have dynos?

Is 21 psi safe to run on a N55 engine? Did you upgrade the turbo or something ?

Not that this amateur can tell. Although today I noticed it shifted pretty poorly when DTC off.

Not sure if I've seen someone report back on how the car feels with stage 2 turbo. What are your driving impressions of the car with the turbo?

BLUF: I wanted more power at higher speeds and I got more power at higher speeds, I wanted power to increase from 5-7k rpm and not flatten out and that is also what I got. I am impressed and enjoy the car a whole lot more now.

With all previous upgrades (CAI, DP, JB4) I could tell there was more power but couldn't "feel it." I didn't feel any real power increase until I introduced meth. However, talking to darkhold and seeing some of his videos I realized I wanted to get the turbo.

After the install I was a little disappointed on the drive home (had a performance shop in Belgium do the install). I didn't notice any real increase in power between 0-75mph and couldn't go above that until I got to Germany . I did notice some increase in power at higher speeds but not enough to really justify the purchase.

It wasn't until I got some advice from Darkhold on how to setup my Map 6, that I really noticed the power. I have limited my boost on 1st/2nd gear and the car shifts so fast between those gears that the 0-60 may be faster but cannot really tell, but the 3rd-5th gear are FAST.

Basically it took me 21 seconds to go from 64-150mph with all previous mods on an unresticted autobahn with about 100-200' elevation climb. After the first Map6 update I was able to go 0-150mph in 20 seconds.

As far as videos, I hope to get some with Darkhold on 31 August, hopefully we can get some side-by-side comparisons of his light weight 135 and my family sedan 335x.

Thanks for the impression, give me something to think about for next year or wait and see what else hits the market.
