Broke my M4 this am!

While bedding in brakes & heat cycling tires 1st session my transmission decided to stop delivering power in the odd numbered gears and there is a loud thumping noise while it is trying to deliver power in those gears. The strange thing is there are no notifications alerting to a problem.I was only puttering waiting for the temps to come up.I drove the car to the dealer which was about 80kms away using the even numbered gears.Everything points to the No1 clutch going

That is really unfortunate. The DCT has proven to be pretty tough so I'm interested in the outcome. Hope it is fixed soon!

I missed two days this weekend which were going to be setup days and co driver familiarization for the Ontario 1500 which we are running in September.I think the key thing is having two cars that can be tracked. My dealer was suggesting an M2 for my wife to solve this
Issue!

I do think it is a mechanical issue as there no warnings or anything in the memory. At least my service advisor has a M Coupe has been to the track with myself at one of the dealership track days.

With all the electronics on the car you would think a warning would pop up due to some code being thrown.

We are thinking it is a mechanical issue which is why it did not throw any codes. If it was a control unit issue it would have popped a code!

So may be the loud thumping noise is a new way by BMW to let you know something went boom. You know the Germans only do things the correct way.

I'm certain BMW will address the issue for you under warranty. I'm interested to see what the problem was! As mentioned above, the DCT transmissions are stout- my hope is that this failure was an outlier.

The dealer e mailed me that they are doing a program update 1st as per BMW and they will see what happens once this is done. They feel it is a mechanical issue also.

Interesting! From what I've seen, BMW's warranty process (as it relates to transmissions) skips through a few simpler steps like the one you just mentioned, and typically lands at "let's replace the whole transmission". I'm hoping for the best result for you.

Must be one of the clutches. One clutch is for even gears and other for odd. One of the reasons why the DCT is so quick.

I think it had to be the #1 clutch that is the issue!

They did the programming update and no change in the problem as we expected. Waiting for BMW to make the call of what to do next!It is a Puma case according to the dealer.

As you stated, it must be a hardware issue at this point!

I'm hoping for a swift resolution for you.

Here is todays latest communication.

Quote:
Heard back from BMW again and they want us to perform a shift rod travel test procedure, after which they can determine if there is an issue with the mechatronics as well, and finally if we have the results they are looking for they can authorize for us to take the transmission apart and check for debris.

I know this may seem like a lot of steps but mainly because it is such a new vehicle we need direct authorization from BMW to perform any kind of repair.
The worst thing is I am really quite carefull not doing anything dumb with my driveline. No launch control starts, always full warmed up before using over 3000 rpm and using manual in traffic so it does not slip the clutch starting in 2nd.

As in, oil temp 220F before using 3000rpm ?

that IS being pretty conservative

mine had a similar behavior but i got the 'driveline malfunction' error and the DCT was skipping the even or odd (cant remember) gears. i turned the car off, the error code went away, and everything is fine.

but every now and then, randomly, i'll get that driveline malfunction error on the screen and the car will either do the gear skipping, or not shift at all, like stay in 1st gear and i cant shift out. but every single time, i can shut the car down and immediately turn back on (reboot) the codes go away and the thing drives perfectly fine.

i've tracked it pretty hard on 2 occasions and it held up to the punishment well. first time tracking the car threw that error, 2nd time tracking no errors.

So the good news!BMW has authorized the replacement of the transmission but it will be 2 weeks before it will arrive from Germany.I have asked them if it can be airfreighted. I am pretty sick of driving the 320 XI everyday My dealer has been great through all this!
