Charge Pipe failure...again

So I was merging onto the freeway today and my 2014 335i suddenly lost power and stopped accelerating. Fun times. I was able to get off the next exit and when I popped my hood I saw the chargepipe (I think it's the chargepipe) had popped off.

This car is only 18 months old, and while I am a slightly spirited driver, I have never tracked the car and very rarely use full acceleration. This is the second time this has happened, the first was just a couple months after I got the car.

She is at the dealer now getting repaired, but this is pretty annoying and really gives me little confidence in BMW's quality (this is my 5th BMW) these days.

Would you guys recommend I get an aftermarket charge pipe that would likely be more reliable? If so, how would that affect the warranty? And how easy is it to install myself?

Thanks for the advice.

Pics included.

I never had mine blow off like that, odd. I wouldn't surprised if they didn't put the retaining clip on correctly when they installed it for your first repair. But one of my first mods was replacing the charge pipe, and I haven't had an issue with it yet and I've gone up to 25psi. It is a pain in the ass to install though, doesn't require any special tools.

Can't tell from the pic, is it broken or did it just come off?

That does suck that an OEM part like that would fail under normal conditions but.....

So, if it did break, is there the chance that small broken pieces get ingested by the intake?

I can't tell from the pic if it popped of or cracked as the top part in the pic looks okay. This is a relatively common problem on recent BMW turbo cars.

The only permanent solution is to get an aftermarket (ER) charge pipe. We've sold 1000+ of these for the N54/N55 without any warranty issues.

Unless you have xdrive and install the clamp in the most logical reason and the steering rod ends up rubbing the bolt on the clamp...dealer was not happy about working on car for 3 days to find our it was an aftermarket mod that caused my steering problems.

I am seriously considering it.

You are correct, in this picture it looks like it just popped off. Last time I had this happen, about 9 months ago, the pipe actually cracked and broke off. Waiting to hear from the dealer what the issue was.

Is it just popping off?

If so then it's likely not installed correctly. If that C clip isn't perfectly seated this will cause that issue.

When it's installed it needs to be firmly in place and the C clip needs to click. If a BMW mechanic is doing the work then you'd hope they would know this.

If it's installed correctly and keeps popping off then I'd suggest an upgrade. Although BMW should fix the issue, I personally try to avoid dealers at all costs. Every time I bring my car to a dealer it's scratched, dented or the interior is messed up (seriously).

I'd just get the ER and this is not the salesmen in me telling you.

So the chargepipe actually cracked like it did the first time. They ordered a new one and I have her back now. This is fairly disturbing to me as this is the second time it happened.

My dealer here is pretty good. That is nice because it is the only BMW dealer on the island. So my options are pretty limited. Never had any major issues with them.

I'll definitely be considering upgrading the chargepipe in the near future (just bought a house and renovating the entire place so short on cash now). My only concern there is voiding my warranty for any reason since I got the extended warranty and plan to keep this car for a while.

We will see what happens. I'm looking on the bright side, my car must be far more powerful than your standard 335i if it keeps cracking the chargepipe.

I've never heard of any warranty issues with a charge pipe so you should be good to go. Definitely something I would consider once the finances allow for it.

I'd take the free oem charge pipe from them. Then I would replace it with something like an ER CP.

If you have to go to dealer for anything you can swap it back in a half an hour or less if you are proficient. Most dealers won't care about the CP though. Especially knowing/understanding your oem already broke twice, IMO.
