Off Topic - But X1.....

So bear with me as some of this info was from Autocar, of course as well as the Bimmerpost front page article.

Some of this is relevant of course.

Firstly to me looks pretty good. Lot will rant at the FWD but it looks a great package to me and I had 2.0D of the current X1, was a solid car and reasonable.

Secondly Autocar says it released/public debut is Frankfurt...same as the M2 but X1 images released now?

Thirdly the weight! Have you seen how light it can be, 1430KG, is this not a little less than an M235i? !!!!

Shows perhaps how heavy the 2 is in general which yes we know (cracking car still). So I wonder if this is in any way encouraging for the M2 or is the 2 series platform too fundamental to change for weight savings?

In entry-level sDrive18d guise, the X1 is 135kg lighter than its predecessor, at 1430kg. This is because of the use of more hot-formed high-strength steel and aluminium within the main body structure, the use of tailored blank steel for the front bulkhead and B-pillars and an aluminium bonnet.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for mentioning an X in the M2 forum but I thought the date thing was interesting M2 really really being held back! ?

Got a very very simple answer for you. You are comparing a 4 cylinder with a 6 cylinder. Or is that spec a 3 cylinder?

If you compare the X1 to a 228i, the gap wouldn't be as big. We're also comparing FWD (or did you pick xDrive?) to a RWD car.

Yes totally agree with the above in that is the X1 228i or the equiv 4cyl petrol (name could differ) thus a 6cyl vs a 4cyl.

However just pointing out its a theoretically mid/small SUV car vs what most of us would call a small 2+2 sporty car (note I did not say its a 'sports car' to be clear phew).

I think Porsche are actually able to save weight by doing rear engine and rwd.. whereas putting the engine in the front driving the rear wheels means adding weight in between!

If an M235i had a base price of $84k, it would be lighter than it currently is I'm sure

materials in the chassis and suspension, wheels, wiring and equipment, insulation and carpeting. wiring can add huge amount of weight for all the sensors, receivers, processors, cooling etc.

Front wheel drive can often weigh less and leaves more room in the cabin. Nice for soccer mom vehicles. Nice that BMW is being responsive to their shareholders addressing the hot small SUV market I suppose. Will help with their losses in China.

What does this mean to folks that want BMW to stop their slide into soft, fat cars? It means that BMW will do what's right for the corporation and they will provide the cars their marketing folks say will sell.

Makes sense... I was shocked to see that the M4 is pretty much the same weight as the m235i.

yeah but the premium performance is usually reserved for M models although 228i is the most interesting to me but I don't like the exterior. I think they kept 235i heavy in order for M2 to have better power to weight ratio since both motors are powerful.
