Drivetrain Malfunction

Hi there guys and gals. So for starters I have a 2015 228xdrive sport line with just an intake and a bms stage 1. Dropped on coilovers and different wheels without tpms. I've had the piggyback on for about 6000 miles or so.
Anyways, so I'm driving ready to hop on the highway and as soon as the turbo spools up the car for some reason won't change gears nor go faster, even with applying more force on the pedal. And then on top of that I get a display like this right in the middle of it all. Anyone else ever experienced this? Or is this the cause of the stage 1?

Have not seen this on the N20 but my buddy on the X3 35i was constantly receiving this msg with the bms s1 he got so sick n tired of it he sold it (never saw it again). But there are very very few ppl 1-2% that do get it without a tune too but mostly on the N55 engine.

Drivetrain malfunction is very popular with everyone that has a BMS product (not bashing it or anything) just stating what I've seen in the forums. My buddies with different piggyback along with me have yet to see this.

I appreciate your info and I know what you're saying with the bms products having a low percentage of potential engine issues. I actually had taken the intake and stage 1 off the car yesterday and that message went away and there's no faults on the IDrive control. However the engine light is on now. Can't catch a break over here.

If you're leasing piggyback, if you'r keeping the car for 3yrs+ definitely ECU.

Sure BMS stage 1 can be removed prior to going to the dealer. However they can check your logs and see you were running higher boost than factory. I'm sure they wont be running this when going in for oil change, however when something like this happens they will probably pull logs and inspect.

This makes me still on the fence about going stage 1 because of "what if?"

OP, any verdict on this? Have you taken this to the dealer?

I actually did take it to the dealer yesterday. I removed the intake and bms and strangely they found nothing wrong but didn't slap me on the wrist for using the stage 1 that they most likely saw on my logs. I wasnt too worried considering they are "mod friendly" as long as you keep the original parts. I asked a lot of people, salesmen and techs, and most of the the employees there have some kind of mod done to their leased bmw's, including the one who sold me my car. I'm on a lease as well and this was the first minor issue I've run into. I believe this is the stage 1. How? I'm still not sure on that one. But I emailed Jon from Berger tuning and hopefully he has an answer for me and everyone else wondering.

All tunes whether removed or not leave some trace of over boost parameters inside the ecu's database. My blown motor is more than likely associated with the jb4 system so be careful when driving the car hard....
This happened on jb4 map 1 with normal 91 octane pump gas.

Sorry to hear about your engine loss man.
But what I don't get is that they have made these n20 engines specifically with turbos for both efficiency and power in mind and yet cannot be trusted when adding even a slight amount of power over stock. And who likes stock cars? Not I.

Bmw 2016 218i M sport

Hi everyone I was looking for some help I have a 218i 2016 bmw the drivetrain light has come in 3 times in the last 4 weeks it first started when I took it in to get a separate problem fixed. I’ve had it reset each time and it’s lasted no more that 7 days each time so I know there is something definitely wrong, I know it’s such a vague picture but if anyone has any advice or had the same issue about what it may be it would be much appreciated.

How did you "have it reset"? Generally speaking the tools to do so can also read the codes that caused the issue in the first place....

In any case just wait till it happens again and have someone read the fault codes that are stored. They will be far more helpful than the generic Drivetrain warning.
