Apple iTouch or iPod Classic
Since the 335i I have on order will have the USB connection as an option I'm thinking of going down the MP3 player route. Since I have 2 Macs and an Tunes account and my wife has an 20 Gb iPod - the U2 limited edition - it seems to make sense to continue down the Apple route.
So pros and cons between the iTouch and the iPod classic please. |

If the iPod will primarily be a storage device for use in the car, simply get a regular iPod. If you plan on using all of the bells and whistles available with the Touch, get that. However, if I wanted the bells and whistles of the Touch, I would personally just get the iPhone.

First, how much space do you need? That may be a deciding factor. Second, will you use it outside of the car? If so, go Touch, I love mine. If its staying in the car, get a classic.

Like others have mentioned, no point in getting an iPod touch if its only for your car. Just get an 80GB classic one where you can store all your songs.

How much space you need depends on how you want to use it. If you want to put all your music on and forget about it go with the "Classic".
My take was to use the iPod as a stand in for a CD changer cartridge (that is, bring it inside and put new stuff on it every so often) so I went with the nano. It just seemed more durable to have something without a hard drive, but that's not really based on any hard data. Cons of this setup are that you need to sync when you get sick of the collection on the iPod, but if you start getting into podcasts you'll be doing that anyway to get your new stuff. Pros are that it's cheaper and with less music you won't run into the huge-library navigation idiosyncrasies some people complain of. What I'd *love* to get is something wi-fi that I can sync wirelessly when I'm home, so I can update the selection in the car without physically unplugging it and bringing it inside, or even independently downloading new podcasts on the road. If that functionality is ever added to the Touch it would be very compelling. |

I picked up a 16GB iPhone on Friday and it is magic . However, I have one problem, the voice does not work with my bluetoothed E46, but I am hoping it will work with my e90 that I'll order in a few months.
I have no regrets, but I needed the 16GB model as the 8GB model is too small.

I would have bought the Touch by now if I traveled more or lived somewhere where I could ride the train. As it is my E61i browser does enough for me.

I have a Classic. The Touch was far too small for me, but now that there is a 32gig Touch it's actually a feasible alternative to the Classic. That being said, I'm sticking with my Classic for car/music then buying an iPhone once the morons in Cupertino get their acts together and shove some 3G in it.

Cost per gigabyte of the Touch is crappy compared to the Classic, but if all your music fits, and you think you'll use it to watch movies when not in your car, might as well go for it, I love mine. I even browse e90post and bimmerfest with mine!

It is also possible an iPhone with its wi-fi or edge connection (edge iTunes not verified) to download on the road. Maybe in the future iPhone will have an iTunes lite that allows you to schedule/subscribe to a download like the full iTunes version. But this isnt syncing with a computer, its purchasing of new content. The iPhone and Touch allow you to use wi-fi to access iTunes and buy new music without the need for a computer. So you can update the Touch from the car when you are in range of wi-fi by buying more songs. Again, this is a computer-free update through purchasing, not syncing. Its not automatic since iTunes cant read our minds... yet. Quote:
On another subject, anyone know how the iPod Classic, Touch and iPhone (with the latest firmware) work with the old iPod adaptor (pre-USB adaptor)? |

160 GB Classic. Then you'll have enough space for storing all songs you'll ever want in HIGH quality (Apple lossless) needed to get good sound.
