F80 @ Watkins Glen International

Ran my annual event with the Ferrari Club at Watkins Glen last week. All in all went very well. I managed to destroy the front pads, they only lasted one day at NHMS and 4/5 of a day at Watkins Glen (couldn't run last session no pad left lol). So, looks like I need to upgrade to XP12's in the front (from XP10's) and hope for the best. At least the brake fluid didn't boil this time! My best lap was a 2:09.27, which is only 2 seconds off of my E46 race car. In consideration of the fact that I still have not done a proper alignment, I was on street tires as opposed to r-compounds, and I was braking early due to the sketchy pedal, I would say the car did about as well as I could have ever expected! With coilovers and r-compounds this car could run under 2:05 all day. I suppose the only 'complaint' I could voice is the car really is heavy, you can definitely feel it and see it in the video. Still in love!

P.S. I now have four Oxford Green calipers

Well done, 2.05 is quick.

Yes heat sure does change the color of calipers, these used to be gray / silver.

I'm running XP12's upfront and XP10's in the rear and the pads and rotors still look new after 2 hard days. Im surprised the XP10's went that fast.

Cracking driving and cracking car sub 2:10 is great time, let alone on street tires of course (AD08s?). Great to watch

Couple of questions:
  • still running JB4?
  • How is the KW HAS working out?
  • What is the EDC issue you have had with the TC Kline camber plates and is it resolved yet? I received the camber plates this morning and installation is tomorrow, so I'd appreciate any tips
Thank you in advance.

I was contemplating seeing if BMW would warranty them, but I would just turn them green again so not worth it haha.

Me too, I think they were just well outside of their head threshold. XP12's should hold up much better.

Yup street tires, AD08R's. Was running JB4 on Map 2. KW HAS has worked well, I still need to corner balance and align it though, at the moment I basically just guessed lol. EDC issue is still unresolved, the supplied nuts are an M12 x 1.5 thread and the EDC shocks are M14 x 1.5. I tried to tap them and did one successfully but the tap broke doing the second one so...still working on that lol.

Try the short course, even faster, but takes 75% of the fun factor away. Short course has a faster avg speed than Lime Rock, which is extremely fast.

We ran the short course for about half a day and I really did not like it all and I agree with you that it was nowhere as much fun!

Caliper change was due to heat, I kind of like them, they're unique now lol.

Have all of the calipers changed color at this point or is it just the one corner?

This is a common thing on Porsches. Especially in the rear.

OP, thanks for the review. I was looking for some info about lap times around WGI with new M3/4, and here it is.
I am going to say that, not every driver will be able to lap this track in 2:09 on street tires, and based on your driving on that video, you are good
With r-comp. tires you should have no problem shaving 4 seconds off, and 2:05 is a race car territory.
WOW, i am impressed by this cars capability, and looks like i made a mistake spending on numerous mods on my e92 M3. Even SCed with coilovers on BFG-R1 tires i couldnt brake 2:10 on this road course.
Still love my car though, but might buy m4 next year.

As I said, I was really impressed with how fast the car was considering the minimal mods/money I put into it. But the reality is, the F8X chassis is significantly improved over the E9X. And I mean noticeably significant.
