Climate Control Questoin

Does anyone know how to keep the climate control from coming on every time you start your car?

It doesn't matter if the climate control was off when I turned the car off last- it ALWAYS comes on when I start the vehicle.

My X5 is the same. Someone asked the same question here not long ago, and I believe someone said the car can be coded to stop this.

I think mine remembers if it was on or off but I always leave it on in lowest setting anyway to prevent condensation...

you can code it to be "always off" though.. look in the cheatsheet in the DIY section

I went back and checked this after the fact and it does indeed default to where it was when you last shut off your car. If you do not want it on...turn it off when you shut down.

Wish my X5 was that way. If I turn off the ignition, the HVAC is back on the next time I turn the ignition on.

Yep...I did a couple of tests. I tested where I turned the system totally off...ie no LED display. It was off when i restarted. I also tested with leaving it on Auto and turning off the AC and when restarted the system was on but AC was off. So it just does where you left it.

I'd go to your dealer then, my 2015 228 stays wherever I left the settings when I shut the car off.

Yes...your origional post is why I checked it. Not sure why yours is behaving differently. Seems silly that M235i would behave diff than the 228i.

Did you turn the car off overnight? Or just for a few minutes?

The aircon fan coming on everytime is the most annoying thing about this car. The dealer has no idea why it happens, but I expect them to come back to me with the exact same asnwers as provided for above.

It is how the car is designed. If you leave the HVAC on low/auto I don't know how it's that annoying, I never drive the car with the HVAC off so I guess I don't understand the rage.

Next person can complain how the AC recirculation won't stay on manual for more than a few minutes. #firstworldproblems

On older BMWs you could turn off the HVAC fan / display by clicking the fan speed control "down" button until the display went blank, but the HVAC would always turn back on again (at the lowest fan setting) after a restart.

I recall reading somewhere a very long time ago that BMW does this for safety reasons -- something related to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Since this has been done near forever, I doubt there is any way to code it to disable it.

All I can say is it's nice to be able to turn off the fan in the first place, as it is quite pointless to spin a fan when driving in nice weather with the windows down.

Overnight. If I turn the system off when I park it in the garage the next morning when I start it up it remains off.

It's not "rage", it's just random and annoying if you frequently drive with the windows and/or roof open. Maybe the wipers should automatically turn on with the ignition in case it's going to rain, or the defroster, seat heater, radio, etc...

Do you actually feel it if the fan is on the lowest speed or is this more philosophical about design/function? Both can be annoying, but the manufacturers do have a real concern about maintaining some airflow to offset potential CO buildup which is not noticeable until its too late unlike rain, cold, etc.

My wife's Jeep does most of that and it's a fantastic feature. The car will automatically turn on the seat heater and steering wheel if it detects temperatures below freezing when you remote start.

I guess the point is when the HVAC is set to low, it's nothing more then a mouse fart. If you want it off press the fan down button once. The overall life impact of that is pretty low.

Couple of thoughts. If having the AC turn on with the car is life-saving from a CO2 perspective, it should be in every BMW and probably every car manufactured. If not, it's not consistent with being economical as running the compressor uses more fuel.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) can silently put you down. CO2 accumulation from exhalation is more noticeable with symptoms before it becomes highly dangerous. To my knowledge every car manufacturer does have the air flow start with the car. Not the A/C, which is simply temperature adjustment, but the airflow to prevent CO accumulation.

If this is about fuel economy, my understanding is that the low-friction compressor drains less power than overcoming the aerodynamic loss of open windows/roof. No compressor and closed windows would be most economical, but then, the ventilation safety issue is present.

Exactly. I have a convertible so its particularly annoying since I only drive the car when it is really nice out- not too hot and not too cold...so I very rarely have the climate control on.

I have the convertible too, and if you set it to 72 degrees, low fan/auto the amount of air that comes out on an average day on start up is virtually nothing.
