Took her to the track today

Hey guys,

I took my stock M235i to the local drag strip today. Best time was a 13.40. I couldn't seem to get any lower. I was hoping the Launch Control feature would be helpful but my worst times came from having it enabled. The car gripped better by just stomping on the gas. I am on the stock Michelin PSS tires. Any advice?

Here is a video I made:

That looks weird... launch control is launching at 1krpm?
Do you see anything showing "launch control active" when you do it ?

Try DTC ON - Comfort - trans in D/S mode... also you can let some air off the rear but not too much else you will get a TPMS warning and won't allow to switch to Sport mode

Theory is that in Comfort suspension is softer so rear shouldn't bounce that much at launch and give you better traction... you could configure "sport" to drivetrain only if you want the sharper throttle too...

Also try to leave on the 3rd yellow, don't wait for green ;-)

Was that a CTS-V ?

What was the 60ft time? Also what is your shift point?

Have not run the 435 ZF8 yet but got my best times in the 7DCT with a 2nd gear launch. As mentioned above you should be leaving on the last yellow. You need to work out where on the light, dim on - bright full on - dim off, so you don't redlight. Not much point in running over 6K RPM with these N55 motors. N54 to 6250.

Thanks for the tips. I am going to try again in a couple weeks! Yes that was a CTS-V and it was insanely fast.

The first attempt I started launch control too early and had to cancel out. Then when I tried it again it didn't activate

I assume your traction control was completely off? I don't have a M235 but I have a 335 msport x-drive with 6mt and I couldn't get under 13.5. For reference my previous 335 RWD 6MT best was 13.6. Great launch but 3rd gear is way too long in both cars. I would have expected much lower with the 8AT and short gearing/less weight.

I am a noob at the track, so I am sure an experienced driver could get a much better time.

Traction control was off. I was doing this in Sport+

Track time

Your time was pretty good. I had a 135 DCT with PPK1 and got a best 13.2 and two 13.4. You can probably get better times with practice. Remember- launch on the 3rd yellow and don't wait for the green

Thank you. I think I get all nervous waiting for that green. Launching on the third yellow might actually help me out a ton.

If you were in sport + then Dsc was not fully off but just dtc on which is probably pretty similar for drag purposes

Best I got was 13.195 but didn't have time to launch in 2nd

So are you telling me I should try and turn everything off?

Do not turn everything off. Sport+ is fine for the drag strip. Also, I got the best times with my 135 DCT just stomping on it. Launch control starts were slower.

No, I'm just saying sport+ doesn't mean Dsc fully off.

You could try Dsc off but I would stick with Dtc on. It is supposedly optimized forward acceleration

At least on the 6MT if you don't hold down the traction control button for a few seconds until it says DSC Off or whatever, the car cuts power and doesn't launch right. Maybe different on an automatic. That takes the car out of Sport.

Did you also pull the stick over into the sport position & run on the paddles? If you just mashed it & let it shift for itself you slowed it down.

Car should be around 13 seconds. Pure stock my old 335is was 13/109 & I think the power to weigh ratios are about the same..

I agree with this, as my best times were in full automatic mode in sport+.

Ran a best of 13.0 with a short time of 1.9... power braked and launched at just shy of 2000 rpm. Link to video: https://youtu.be/OJGNCwG5DnA
