Escort SmartRadar Radar Detector
Just thought I'd throw a quick post up on how to install the Escort SmartRadar Radar Detector in a 2008 BMW 335xi.
(1) Order the MirrorTap, MT-4012 (you may want a longer length, 12" was cutting it close for me). I bought it on amazon.com for $24.99 (2) Pop the plastic rear-view mirror cover off (you can use a credit card to get it started, but it should pop a part relatively easily) (3) The main (larger) wiring harness is where the connections will be made. Disconnect the harness and pull it down. You will see a green and white wire (this is your 12volt) and a brown and black wire (ground). These wires should be in the bottom row, right next to each other. Insert the red wire into the same slot as the green/white and the black into the same slot as the brown/black. You will want to try to find the most snug fit. Apply a small amount of pressure to ensure the wire is all the way in. (4) Start the car and ensure the radar detector turns on. (5) Snap the cover back on (this may take a bit of trial and error, but eventually it will go back together). Ensure that the newly added wires are not in the way. I also used the supplied zip ties to secure the MirrorTap to the existing wire bundles to prevent them from coming out. The above steps should work with any Escort Radar detector. I have an auto-dimming mirror, which I believe is a requirement in order to have the necessary power to the rear-view. |
