Intake vs downpipe

I just received my new 228i and I'm definitely buying the bms stage 1 tune since it'll be easy to install for me. I'm also looking to make 1 more mod, but can't make up my mind whether I should get the afe intake or a downpipe. What are the pros and cons of getting either? What is the cost of installation? Which will make the car sound nicer? Which will provide higher performance gains? Which is the better overall mod if this will be the only mod to the car other than the tune?

Downpipes will provide a lot more power and better sound than the intake.
That being said you need a JB4 with the donwpipes ( JB stage 1 will not clear the DP code and does not have maps specific for catless downpipes).
So in your case it sounds like the intake is a better choice.

Would you recommend to get the jb4 and a downpipe and try to do it myself? I don't know much about tunes.

JB4 is easy to install .
Downpipes are tricky. If you do not have any experience doing exhaust work, it would be a better idea to take it to a mechanic for the installation.
Takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours so we are looking at ~300 labor.
The gains ( performance and sound) are well worth it

I think I understand how to do most of the jb4 installation, but it the wiring part looks complicated since I have a manual transmission 228i

If you take your time and follow the instruction guide, you should be able to get it done without any problems

Catted should not cause a CEL light.
That being said no manufacturer will give that guarantee because eventually the Cats will stop working and then it will cause a CEL light.
That can happen in couple months or years depending on the quality of the downpipes.
