Question Is X5M a winter beater or not?

I was wondering the snow performance of x5m with the oem tires that it comes with...

One of my friends said it is no different than my m5 however that doesn't sound right to me...

Looking at their website it comes with 21" M Light alloy Double Spoke wheels style 612M with perf. non run-flat tires...

They will be horrible in the winter. It's generally absolute madness to use summer tyres in snow. It will be MARGINALLY less awful than an M5 which is only rear wheel drive, but you still won't be able to stop or steer - should you manage to get moving at all.

HOWEVER, with a good winter setup, the X5M/X6M will be great in the snow. I used winter tires on my E70 X5M and it was like a tank in the winter.

Thats the problem... I really dont like to switch tires every year..

Since it is an AWD, I thought it would be still ok to drive with summer tires during winter (snow)...

Probably something to get over if you live somewhere that ever sees snow.

Please. Please. Please. For your sake and the sake of everyone else on the road do not drive a car in the winter with summer performance tires.

I don't care if its a 6x6, if you have 0 traction the most advanced drivetrain in the world will not help you.

i understand but none of the AWD cars or suvs come with snow tires..

most part, they come with all season tires and they all do well in snow. my brothers 550xi had all season and was great on snow...

AWD doesn't change the fact that summer performance tires change from soft and sticky on pavement to slick as ice at roughly 40-45 degrees F. The rubber compound hardens to an extent that it isn't able to grip the road adequately. Winter tires are compounded to remain pliable and able to stick to the road at cold temperatures.

IF you drive in winter(cold weather)... you NEED snow tires!

Is a X5M a good winter beater? Depends on what your summer garage queen is?

Think of it this way. How does AWD help in these scenarios?
- emergency braking situation
- emergency swerve to steer out of danger

Those two reasons above are why I HATE the hype of AWD. I live in the suburbs of Chicago and just started my BMW repair shop. I have seen a big rise in people buying AWD BMWs and it just hurts me deep down inside. Not only are they not buying a true BMW, they also paid a higher premium, they will have quite a bit higher maintenance costs, and the only benefit is better acceleration from a stand still. It's madness!

in other words, you are basically saying that during winter(snow) any car with winter tires will perform better than a car with all season tires..

so i can put winter tires on my m5 and have no problems instead of getting an SUV.

instead of buying a second car for winter, it is cheaper to get snow tires then

You will drop the money on a 6 figure car but wont drop the 3k in winters?

An SUV with winter tires will outperform an M5. I love the M5, but I just ordered a new X6M because where I live in the Pacific Northwest, it's either rainy or snowy a lot of the year.

An X6M with summer tires will be almost as fun as an M5 in the summer, and with winter tires I can have a lot of (albeit slightly different) fun in the winter.

It costs me $40 twice a year to go to the dealer and have them swap the rims out. They store my rims for me. I'll sell my current X6 rims for almost what I paid for them and order new X6M rims for winter. I have a nice coffee and a muffin and check my email on the free WiFi while they switch my rims out.

It's in no way painful, and SO MUCH safer.

The M5 will have issues even with winter tires and rims because it's so low to the ground. It'll turn into a snow plough in even small amounts of powder.

The X5M and X6M have torque vectoring steering, so will handle better in reduced traction conditions (as would any F15 or F16 with the DHP package).

All seasons suck all year round. Seriously - two sets of tires. Not hard

You can have a 8x8 car, it's useless. Try braking on snow with summer tires and your car will act like a sledge.

You can switch the summer tires to all season and be ok in the winter. It would still involve you buying a new set of tires. I would highly recommend investing a bit more into winter tires and rims and swap both twice a year. That's what I do with mine and it works well.

it is just inconvenient to swap but looks like if you want to do drive a fast SUV, thats the only choice..

other option is to get an x5 5.0 and drive the same tires all year long but then sacrifice driving an M...

Or just get the dealer to swap them for you when you have the vehicle serviced anyways. They will set you up with a winter tire package and even store them if you want. Since money is no object as you have stated.

Or do you not change your oil either as its to inconvenient?

it is not easy to find winter tires/rims all the time.
when i got my m5, all winter tire packages were sold out and was hard to find.
it was easier for me to buy an suv back then.

i dont know if any tires/rim package is available for new x5m yet?

I highly recommend you buy a set of Winter tires/wheels if you are going to buy an X5M and you live in NJ.

They are available from BMW, or at least they were a few weeks ago. I bought mine from BMW and they arrived a few weeks ago.

Maybe they were sold out via BMW but there are countless tire and wheels package available for an M5 or an X5M.

Long story short sell your new factory BMW tires and buy all seasons. Defeats the purpose of an M car but mission accomplished
