Exhaust Corrosion on 6 month old 435i covered by warranty?

My wife's 435i went through this one winter & the side chrome exhaust tips are now coated in soot.

The driver's side pipe cleaned up nicely, but the passenger side couldn't be cleaned up until I used metal polish & fine steel wool.

I can see that the chrome finish is pitted & showing signs of corrosion.

Are the tail pipes covered under warranty for this after only six months of use?

don't look under your seat at the seat pan, that might be rusted too.

Mine has the same and I don't see how that would be covered. And as soon as you get a new one it will do the same thing anyway. Well, let us know if you're successful getting that covered and I'll follow suit.

I have 2 OEM chrome exhaust tips I'm willing to part with. Less than 4000 miles and zero salt / snow on them.

I swapped mine out for gloss black from the Sport Line.

The ones I pulled off my 3 month, 1200 mile car were exactly the same. Thats just how they are. Same thing is happening with the replacement Cyba tips, so I think its something with the metal the exhaust is made of or the gasses coming from the motor.

Thanks for the info guys.

Maybe I'll replace them with the black tips once they're shot.

Are they just bolt on?

They're held on with pressure clips. Whack them with a hammer on the back to get them off and press the new ones on the same way from the front.

It's normal btw. The car runs rich to heat up the cats.

Yeah...that would make sense if a richer fuel mixture results in hotter EGT. Too bad that's not the case.

How often do you wash your car? It doesn't take long at every car wash to just rinse and wipe off the tailpipes.

The tips on the S3 were coated with soot after less than 500 miles, same with the S4. Used to it from the GTI, just becomes part of the standard maintenance of the car. Wipe those tips regularly and use a good polish/wax.

It goes through the touchless wash at the local Esso every weekend during the winter. We usually get a few mild spells in southern Ontario where I can hand wash it. This winter though, it was freezing cold the whole winter....it never let up.

The 435 had a lot of the build up on the passenger side pipe when we bought it (had a couple hundred kilometres on it).

My detailer got the soot off when he applied CQuartz Finest to the car, but he had to work at the soot to remove it. I guess some of the damage was probably already there when we bought it.
