Apple CarPlay support in new 2016 F30 LCI?
Does anyone think BMW will include support for Apple CarPlay (or AndroidAuto) in the new 2016 F30 LCI?

I don't think so. If they were, we would have seen more hype from BMW via CES etc., i.e. "check out our CarPlay demo, coming soon to BMW models". And we didn't, and the full details of the MY2016 F30 will be coming out in <2 months.

If CarPlay happens it will be in the next gen 3 Series, not an LCI. |

I actually don't think I want Car Play integration; and I'm not claiming this points to its impending release...
From BMW's press release on the upcoming NYIAS: In addition, from the New York Auto Show, BMW will announce an app integration involving a leading streaming music and digital radio network that will enhance the driving experience for BMW drivers.

I imagine most people craving Car Play see it as a less-expensive route to achieving in-dash navigation than BMW's system. The problem with that logic is surely BMW is going to require the Tech Package to have Car Play functionality.

I also think it'll be a $500 "Enhanced Navigation & Phone Integration" option atop the pricey Tech package too. People forget that BMW signed a lengthy contract with Nokia/Navteq just two years ago and Nav is a very profitable option for them. I'll get CarPlay when it's available, but no one should think it's going to be a cheap way to avoid the stick-on vent mount they're currently using. |

IF they have CarPlay in the F30 LCI, it would likely come in a headunit upgrade the next model year, when the 4 series LCI comes out, judging from BMW's non-synchronized upgrading habits for Engine, Navigation, Body Style, and other features. It's BMW business model to keep the models incrementally upgrading each year. They make more money, from the Apple-type people who want to "upgrade" their car because of a new navi. It's called "planned obsolescence".

Let's all be honest, while iDrive is serviceable, Apple and even Google are much more adept at developing and refining user interfaces. I imagine we'll see significant migration away from proprietary, clunky systems from car manufactures in the next few years, settling on one to two platforms, much like (and probably mirroring) the smartphone market.

I imagine that too but BMW will fight it all the way. Selling us their nav and their tech is big $$$ for them. What's the incentive for BMW to mirror / Car Play your phone?

Let's hope not...some of us don't want or need a "smart" phone, and I sure as hell don't want to be dependent on any kind of device like that for in-car information/navigation. As a supplement/add-on, yes - for those who are co-dependent on their phones. I prefer a more pure driving experience.

And it's more than that, you can't have a third party in another industry designing the UI for your vehicle. Imagine if in a few years time a protocol changes or another type of device displaces what we now know a smartphone to be. Think of the CPO market, think of those who buy a used BMW in 2025 who suddenly can't make a phone call or listen to music or find a point of interest because of a standard that was around in 2015 and vanished 10 years hence. CarPlay will be offered as a pricey add-on to an in-house navigation/infotainment/telephony system. It can never be a standalone product. |
