Top Mount ST Question

For those that have experience with a top mount kit, what are the under hood temps like? Melting of wires, valve cover leaks, etc.? Are these show cars or can you make repeated pulls without setting the car on fire or damaging wires?

Thanks in advance.

No you won't melt anything and yes it's also easier to access things with the top mount not just a show thing

Depends. Mixed results, some kits seem to be fine, others absolutely have caused wire looms to melt, valve covers to melt, all sorts of fun stuff. FWIW i've seen the VM kit in person and it appeared to fit nicely, owner was able to get the engine cover back on (honestly easier said than done w a top mount).

I just got my headers back from getting ceramic coated. I'm also using the supplied turbo blanket, coating and wrapping the dp and also coating the WG tubes for no reason. First thought on my mind was performance second was heat management. I'll let know when I get it installed. This is with the vm kit. My bottom mount was fine just wrapped and the tubes came up to the valve cover. I even had a wire loom sitting on the header for a month before I found it. Zero damage sitting on the heat wrap

I was hoping you would chime in.....not that I don't appreciate the other comments. I am interested in your experience with the VM kit and comparison of engine bay heat. I have two friends with FFTec bottom kits and they are considerably cooler than stock turbos. Which turbo are you planning to run?

I'm going with the same turbo I ran on the bottom mount the pte 6466, how ever I'll be using a 1.00ar vs the .82 to make up the difference with the twin scroll. The bottom mount ran cooler than stock for the most part. After back to back pulls tuning, or dyno sessions it would get pretty hot as expected. Normal driving was was better than stock temp wise. My normal routine when I was tuning or beating on the car was to come home and leave the hood open in the garage so I have a very good idea of what to expect.

Looking forward to delta temp feedback, especially with those Savannah summers.

@Aerotest I have 3 temp probes and 1 ambient probe. I was thinking putting one temp probe on the plastic valve cover over cyl 2 and cyl5 and maybe the third near the intake? Or any other area of concern? The ambient will go in the cowl closest to the windshield wiper. This will be done on my fbo before the ST to compare to the ST when it gets installed

Great plan. This will a valuable piece of data IMO. if you can remember record ambient temp.
