Getting Tints on Saturday ...Any Advice?
Ok real quick I live in NJ and im gonna get tints on Saturday and wondering how dark i can get without being constantly harrashed by cops. Back story is I have an e39 540 with 35 percent all the way around and never got pulled over for tints in the 5 years I've had the car. Ideally I want maybe 20 percent all the way around and maybe a light windshield tint but I know ill be pushing the limits with the windshield...You thoughts???

I'd say keep it legal if you don't want any chance of getting pulled over for it.

Tint"s" is as bad as asking what kinda track "breaks" one should get. But since you want me to also answer your question, I think you should get clear tint that protects against UV rays and also diminishes heat in the cabin and also protects your skin and your leather. Why clear? Well, if you don't live in TX or AZ or some other desert, you don't really need tint for the shading effect of it...you can wear sunglasses. Privacy? I guess I don't really get why people are so weird about the fact that people can see you though no ones really looking at you. The main reason why I think you should get clear tint is because it would fully eliminate your singular concern about policemen harrassing you. Last thing you want is a cop to have an excuse to pull you over. I like no tint on my car because I like having the best visibility in front, to the side, and behind me (to scan for cops) etc. especially at night. If you must get tint, go with 35-50%. Windshield tint is ridiculous in my opinion but again, if you must, be conservative. |

Thank you for this helpful advice. Actually I've never thought out about clear tint but honestly i like "tint" for privacy and i believe it's more asteticaly pleasing on most cars. And to your point about tinting the windshield being ridiculous, strikes me as an odd take on things because people do more outlandish things than that on this forum. And being that this is a "car enthusiast" forum i would expect your tolerance for ridiculous mods to be a little higher |

I guess I just have a really strong preference for clear windows. It's hard enough to see pedestrians just walking straight out into traffic or kids playing in the street etc. without front windshield tint. As far as looks go, when tint becomes so dark that you can't make out anything inside the car, I think it makes the car look bad. When you can't see inside a car to see the interior, seats etc, the lack of depth and the opacity of the windows flattens the look of the car and imo cheapens the look. I'm just not a fan but I know I'm in the serious minority with that opinion. |

I always get 30%, all around, on my cars (un-tinted windshield). I have not had a signal issue with cops. IMO, its the best balance of a decent darkness but not looking ghetto. I live in WI.

Having just had new moles removed from the side of my face well after the age that we're supposed to stop making moles, I'll never drive a car without tint again. Sun is also the worst enemy of leather interiors. I just did mine with 5% rear and 35% on the front, none on the windshield. Some new hybrid tint. They demonstrated the heat blocking ability compared to the Suntek Carbon I believe, and it was quite dramatic.

Any percentage less than 75% I believe is illegal in NY. Depending on where you live, the second you go into illegal territory, you risk getting a ticket, regardless of the percentage.
I currently have 20% all around and Iv been pulled over twice in about 2 years. The second time I was let go with a warning. My windshield is not tinted because I think tinting the window that's showing you what's in front of u is stupid, but that's my opinion. Edit: Doctors can write you notes saying you need tints for medical reasons.

I drive an 08 e90 m3 and my wife drives a 10 b8 A4, I bought both CPOed, and both came with tint. My m3 has 30% and I think it makes the car look a little better and isn't an obvious hindrance to my vision when driving. The A4 tint however is dark, my wife complains about it, and I have a hard time seeing out of it in certain situations. It's probably 10% or 20%, I keep thinking I am going to remove it, but always procrastinate... I got pulled over for it once and the cop said it looked good, I think he was surprised to find a couple in their mid 30s driving it, he gave me a warning... I told him it came that way and wasn't crazy about it... He kind of gave me a "yea right"

I have 20% on my M3 in a city where tint is heavily enforced... Haven't been bothered.

Maybe people like to pick their nose while driving and tint would give you that privacy. LOL
I personally enjoy having 30% all around except the front windshield(none). I feel like I'm sitting in a fishbowl otherwise. |

I did 35% all around. Looks classy and not too dark to atract attention from authorities.
