I may be wrong but I believe e92 mirrors don't work on an e90 car or vice versa. mashimarho purchased an e90 mirror by mistake once, it did not fit his car.

Yea, e90/e92 have different mounting plates or whatever you want to call them

correct. I believe most of the hardware is similar, but the housing is different.
