Quaife vs Wavetrac LSD

No one can argue the importance of an LSD especially with a FBO 335i.

I've ran a Quaife LSD for a little over a year and it performed flawlessly on the track and drift events. There's a very slightly thump going into first gear but otherwise it's silent.

Regrettably I parted out some of the goodies on my 335i and thought I was ready to move onto a different platform. I sold the Quaife and rode around on an open diff again. I thought the LSD wasn't needed for a street car but boy was I wrong. After having the LSD then going back to an open diff I realized how important the LSD is for traction. The open diff completely sucks!

Anyway, I'm back at rebuilding my 335i and just installed a Wavetrac LSD. After paying a shop twice to install my Quaife, then remove it I decided I'll tackle the Wavetrac install myself. Both diffs were built and bought from VAC Motorsports so it was just a pumpkin swap.

Wavetrac so far... slight thump only in reverse, no thump when driving. Very, very slight whine on high speed decel (Wavetrac zero load patented technology?) Thus far, not much difference from the Quaife but I have a track day in late March. Stay tuned for my report.

When I had my Quaife I bought an OEM finned diff cover from a forum sponsor for $400! After doing some research I realized it was just a 6 series cover that was slightly modified. I bought the finned cover and modify it myself (cost $150). I recommend a finned cover because after a drift event my fluid overheated and spat out.

Anyway, if you don't have an LSD go get one now! I have a track event booked in late March and I'll report back on how the Wavetrac performs.

On to the fun:

video coming soon...

Updated: 4/1/15

Came back from a track day a couple of weeks ago. Video here.

So the difference I noticed between the Quaife and Wavetrac was that when I'm off the gas the rear still felt planted and ready to go. That was only felt at the limit and on the track. If you're looking for max potential then the Wavetrac "could" be better.

In sum: you can't go wrong with Quaife or Wavetrac.

Or just with tune,
The LSD was my second mod after JB4,
JB4 + race gas + open diff makes a one scary and unpredictable car to drive

Please advise what was involved in modifying the diff cover? Which 6 series did it come from?

+1, more info on the finned diff cover? Do you have the larger or small diff pumpkins?

ton of info here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1057536

I have a large pumpkin, manual...

in sum, 6 series OEM diff cover (~$120), 130mm bolt ($15), ~15mm spacer ($5), cut a few fins w/ a cutting wheel or dremel..

Wavetrac has been great so far. Works for donuts too Though mine are less entertaining with some wet ground.

Please advise on what your $5 solution to the ~15mm spacer was? The link referenced uses a spacer for $26?

Did you order any other short or long bolts besides the (1) 130mm bolt?

Thanks for your post and the referenced post, rep'd!

yes I ordered 1 x short bolt for the diff cover..

instead of making or buying an expensive spacer I bought something like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Climax-5-...-062/203025026. also add 1 fender washer if necessary... it's hard to explain but once you're under there you'll see if you the gap you need to fill..

I'm a LSD noob. What makes the LSD so good for normal street driving? Without it were you getting DSC intervention on a regular basis? The reason I ask is that I don't track my car and rarely get the DSC light.

You are cruising on the freeway going 50mph traffic clear up ahead and you want to have some fun: you floor it, there is a tiny bit of lag and then BOOM the boost hits you like you are being launched from an aircraft carrier,

With an open diff the car goes sideways into the next lane, and only then does the DTC intervenes and saves you from spinning out, it’s an electronic system and requires time to react but you are already slipping into the lane next to you.

with LSD it’s a mechanical system that reacts instantaneously it feels like the backend wiggles a bit as power gets transfers side to side but while keeping you in a straight line…

but if you really want to get educated on it, shoot them a PM and sincerely inquire about why you should buy theirs, listen to what they have to say. Tell them you dont know much about LSD they will explain. I knew what I was getting into and the questions I didnt think they could answer they were more educated on than I ever though anyone would be.

well stated... if you baby the car and just putt around town you probably won't notice the lack of an LSD... if you do spirited driving, fast turns, accelerate quickly, etc then you'll feel the faults of the open diff. the car is unstable and less predictable.
