M3+DCT vs M6+SMG

After reading that the MDCT will improve the M3 0-62 time to 4.6 seconds and will have launch control implemented I was wondering which M gives the best 'wall of acceleration' so to speak.

I ask this after some board members have commented that the new M3 (MT obviously) doesnt give the same sense of speed as the M6 does despite similar quoted 0-62mph times.

Note this isnt about handling or fun etc....just pure acceleration.

Thanks

I thought I read the time for the M-DKG was 5.1sec compared to the MT 5.3sec. Maybe I read it wrong.

M3 coupe MT 4.8s
M3 coupe DCT 4.6s
M6 coupe SMG 4.6s

Subjectively however most professional reviewers as well as board members have commented on how riducloously quick the M6 is while this has not been as pronounced for the M3.

Is it possible that DCT/SMG make all the difference? or is there another factor to why the M6 gives such a rush?

The best recorded time for 0-60 for the 6MT Coupe is 4.1 seconds. That is likely a bit of an outlier. However, this does mean that a similar outlier result for DCT for the Coupe should be <4.0 seconds. That being said 0-60 is more bragging rights than a real test of speed. Have a look at the thread titles "More performance figures" for some nice real world data and comparisons vs. other cars.

launch control is a great feature, will be able to put down consistent 0-60 and 1/4 mile times

not sure about that ask a F1 driver, being able to stand on the brakes and drop down in the gears while it does perfect downshifts and then concentrating on finding the apex and being able to get on the throttle and go through the gears without ever missing a shift and shifting faster than any manual is quite a feat

not to mention, that wus will be pulling on you from stop light to stop

The rush comes from greater torque per kg of car.

And I might be wrong, but the M6 will probably do 100km/h to 140km/h faster than the M3 - which is why you'll feel the greater push back into your seat in an M6.

M6 = 520Nm of torque / 1710kg weight = 0.304
M3 = 400Nm of torque / 1580kg weight = 0.253

That's a rush ratio of 0.304/0.253 = 1.2 times as much rush!

Close, don't forget torque delivered to the wheels, not crank torque. Gears effectively multiply torque, just like a long wrench does. Also don't foget that hp predicts performance better than torque.

0-60 is the dumbest benchmark for modern cars....it is almost always governed by traction.

A car is made or dismissed by 3rd and 4th gear performance - these gears take into account power, aero, gearing etc.... This is where M cars start to excel.

0-60 is for meat heads and was relevant in the 1970s to the 1980s.

RS6 = 650Nm of toque / 2025kg weight = 0.321

So does this mean the RS6 is indeed the quicker in the 100k/m to 140km/h sector.

You can't compare an F1 car gear box to a road car gear box. It's like comparing engines.
