Got a call from my dealer today

Got a call from my dealer today and the woman on the phone says my car sent them an indication that it is time for an oil fluid top off....

What other types of indications is my car sending them....?

?? I was unaware that the car was able to link to a mobile hotspot and send information (of any type) to a 3rd party (dealer).

I would assume its complete bullshit, but there are far more knowledgeable people on this board that can prove or refute this dealers claim.

Does this car send data to 3rd parties remotely?

I would like to generalize this a bit more, since I think it is an interesting question and I am curious if the claim is correct. Is the car able to send data remotely to a 3rd party on its own?? I haven't heard of this on the M3/4 but I'm also not well versed in all aspects of the car.

It is my understanding that BMW implemented a security update recently on its I-Drive system for vehicles in Europe to actually restrict remote access to the F8x. I guess you can also share info to third parties through the system. In the US, won't that violate certain laws with respect to privacy and information gathering? Maybe the forum attorneys can chime in.

The M3/M4 have direct cellular internet connections. That is how the remote application for Apple / Android works. Thus, for example, when you use the app or Google maps to send a destination to the car for use by your nav, you are communicating with the car through the internet and through its cellular internet connection.

I have no idea what data the car actually does send to BMW or any third party, but it is fully capable of sending this type of data without any need for a separate hot spot.

Welcome to 1984 ;-)

The term "mobile hotspot" typically refers to Wi-Fi, but that's not what your car would generally use to communicate with the outside world on its own(if it even had Wi-Fi, which M3/M4s currently do not, but other BMW's do).

However, BMWs have had a built in cellular connection since at least as long ago as BMW Assist was introduced. BMW Assist may not be standard on all BMWs yet (not certain) but it comes with every M3/M4.

Whether or not it is that exact mechanism by which the car communicates its service needs I do not know for certain, but it could be. Either way it has at least one cellular radio, and probably two or three. It absolutely communicates with outside world, and such communication will only become more integral to BMWs and all automobiles as time goes on.

At any rate, my dealership called me and mentioned that my car notified them that it was time for service, exactly as the OP claimed.

This "technology" is used in fleet vehicles also such as heavy equipment for Caterpillar and John Deere. Pretty cool, they can tell when low oil pressure, high temps etc. Not sure BMW is that elaborate...but for maintaining a fleet and determining which ones need serviced its pretty cool.

Presumably the phone number or location of your dealer is coded into the car somewhere at the time of delivery. Therefore, presumably we can code this out? or to a fake phone number so we don't get calls from the dealership ?

Was the oil level, in fact, low when you checked it in the iDrive system?

It's the automatic service request feature. You can view it in the iDrive settings, nothing new, my past 3 cars have had it.

I'm surprised that this wasn't explained to you upon delivery...

From what I was told, our cars have BMW Connected Drive, which means that our cars literally have a cellular SIM card installed, and the car maintains 3G connection to the cellular networks at all times (when available).
  • This is how weather and stocks widgets work.
  • This is how BMW Concierge works - Call up Concierge and you speak to a call center operator. You can ask them for directions to a specific location/restaurant/Ferrari dealership, and they remotely send the coordinates to your navigation system - AWESOME!
  • This is how BMW Emergency Call works - When you get in an accident, your car assesses the severity and calls the relevant emergency services immediately for you.

This is ALSO how BMW TeleServices works - "service-related" vehicle data is automatically sent to the BMW dealer you purchased your car from.

This is also how BMW will know if you get into a car wreck and if the airbags deploy. They will call you directly into the iDrive system and output the voice through your speakers. If you do not respond, they assume you are injured and will automatically dispatch ambulance to your GPS coordinates.

Gotta love technology and very surprised your SA did not go over this feature with you. In CA, you have to sign off on a form for this.

I've written this a few times on this forum before .
Every single error code is sent to BMW. As soon as your car produces "tuning codes" they will know and void warranty. Friend of mine checked a few cars (4). All out of warranty because of tuning (Stg1 Box only). But that's what we all know -> tuning = no warranty. But this time they'll always know it, that's what changed from the N54/N55 times.
