Preparing for JB4? What do I need
Hey! I'm looking to purchase JB4 G5 very soon and wondering what kind of things i'll need to purchase with it like normal things what fail (ex. stock charge pipe blowing because of boost) or maintenance to perform before doing it so I don't run into any problems after installing.
I've seen people say plugs, coils, walnut blast, charge pipe but wondering what other things i'll be running into after doing the tuning. For right now i'll just be running map 1 because I wont have any other mods on it and don't want excessive boost (map 5). Little background on the car. Just purchased 1 month ago, 2007 335i with 61,000 miles on it, build date 12/15/2006. Water pump and thermostat were just replaced by a local bmw dealer 3 weeks ago. I don't have any history about oil change, plugs replaced etc.. Thanks guys!! Here's some pics of the car just for fun |

i just installed a jb4 on my otherwise stock e90 and im running map 5 with no issues. i have no other mods and didnt replace anything (car has 66k miles services done at 60k) ive only had one misfire and a few other usually related codes but after the second week car runs great doesnt act up or throw ses light. i would invest in plugs, oil change, and probably an air filter or the bms dci then install jb4. also make sure you get the usb makes life so much easier when it comes time to read and clear codes.

When i installed jb4 a year ago, only thing i replaced was spark plugs and ran flawlessly. I did add ER chargepipe, injen intake, vrsf downpipes and intercooler eventually though. The stock chargepipe held up fine for months. It didn't need replacing but i just did it anyway. I just recently replaced 5th cyl ignition coil due to miss fires after installing 2step. hope this helps.

Its pretty! Do nothing. Slap the JB4 on and let it dictate the rest. I put a tune on at 70k miles and went about 10k miles before needing new plugs (misfires during logging). I'm at 100k miles and haven't had to replace anything (scheduled maintenance of course). I'll take that back, I added an intercooler and ethanol tune and after several months of e40 clutch is done! It was fine on 93 octane though.

Change plugs, walnut blast, oil change. +1 on USB run it from JB4 to glovebox for easy logging.
Congrats nice car!

Chargepipe, the stock one is prone to failure (breaking) under higher than stock boost. Other than that, just plugs. If you get misfires then worry about coils.

I'd suggest only doing a Walnut blast then swapping the spark plugs before throwing the JB4 under the hood. Since yours is a '07 I'd also make sure you have an oil cooler+cat can just to be safe.
As far as which map to run I've been running map5 over map1 as it adjusts itself based on your driving conditions. I didn't have a FMIC until a few months after running map5 & didn't have any issues BUT it's been fairly cool outside here (haven't seen over 65F yet). Welcome to the club man! |

Most has been mentioned. Consider an RB PCV valve and/or new vent hose as well.

Thanks guys! Walnut blast is definitely in store and just found out I get a 25% discount off the OE bosch plugs at advanced auto parts so will be ordering those from there . Also will be getting the USB for sure!
What will the oil cooler and catch can do for me? I live in Chicago where in the summer it gets pretty muggy sometimes so I don't want to do DCI until I get a fmic just to keep the heat down, but eventually wanna upgrade some more Also with Map 5.. I usually just drive around normal, not big spirit runs or anything, will I get lower HP and boost than just doing map 1? |

First thing to change would be spark plugs if they haven't been done in the last 20-30k. Other then that the JB, run on map1 doesn't really need any supporting mods.
An upgraded charge pipe is always a good idea. Mike |

In map1 I saw less fuel economy than map5 & whenever I needed to validate my choice of car map5 had the most improvement over stock by a slight bit. I can't believe how douchey Camaro & Mustang drivers are, it makes me feel bad about coming from the same car. |

Spark plugs and if you have the budget for it, grab a charge pipe too.
Dont forget to get the BMS cable so you can datalog and see how the car is running.

Just the JB4 is needed, especially with map 1 (run map 5 instead). The rest of the suggestions are maintenance items that are not related to the JB4 and are your standard maintenance items - or aftermarket parts that you can do if you'd like.

You don't really need anything so as long you don't run into any problems post installation. Biggest problem people run into is the spark plugs. As they age the gap increases and when you turn up the boost with a tune that gap becomes a misfire. Some people get away with a few thousand miles before they need plugs, others get a check engine light at their first time going wide open throttle. You can replace with OEM Bosch/BMW spark plugs or NGK's but they need to be gapped manually. (little cheaper but don't last as long as the Bosch/BMW). You can also check the gap on your stock spark plugs and they could also tell you some signs of how the engines been running prior. A fouled injector is a probably indication of a leaky injector which would need attention, for example.
Charge pipes are also mentioned because just like spark plugs some people can go a few thousand miles and their charge pipe cracks, others go out the first time and the plastic pipe cracks, resulting in no boost. Also with high mileage vehicles there comes the high probably that the stock Diverter Valves begin to leak. This will result in your turbo's working extra hard and if the leak is large enough you'll through a boost leak code. Other then that if you are unfamiliar when the last oil change was done it would be best practice to get a fresh oil change. Once the mod bug hits you will likely want to look for more power, you'll find some healthy gains with an FMIC Upgrade next. Intake and downpipes are some other alternatives but I typically weigh heavily towards the FMIC as it's the healthiest choice for the motor and turbo's. |
