how much work is needed to get this to work in my 2010 E90, which has idrive already (tcu+mulf).

its appx a 20min job (including the coding of your car) for someone experienced. You need to connect the combox(additional wire needed Â£5-Â£10) and code the combox to your chasis. The firmware of your CIC should be updated with latest firmware as the combox is. But it might not be the case. cheers

I'm new to the combox stuff, what else is needed for connected drive to work? Do I have to fit 6FL?

all of the above plus your mobile phone should have a personal hotspot (ability to share internet connection trough USB or Bluetooth or wifi)
