Wrong differential fluid being used at dealerships? It appears not, but...
Initially SAF-XJ was recommended per this maintenance thread from Dackelone.
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1007985 According to this thread almost everyone received SAF-XJ, including myself. Apparently they discovered that the f80 was supposed to get MSP/A fluid which I'm not familiar with. See below for the post and thread. http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...&postcount=202 Last edited by erio; 02-13-2015 at 09:09 PM.. |

I found some more information. The complete vehicle tech info guide from this thread states "the final drive oil MSP/A (e.g. Castrol SAF-XJ) is the same oil used in previous M vehicles with variable M differential lock." It's as though they are the same fluid and there is no change. This is conflicting information. We need someone to get us the real answer.
See page 60 of the tech info guide attachment in this thread: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1015603 |

This is the same M differential fluid used in the previous M vehicles:
http://www.ecstuning.com/ES197413/ http://www.rmeuropean.com/Part-Numbe..._E095124A.aspx The twin turbo f10 is mentioned in that list above (second link). Given the large amount of users however over the 1200 mile limit, this doesn't seem like a serious concern. Situation will be rectified if needed in future oil changes (they should include a differential oil change free of charge if this is an issue). |

The current oil specification is "BMW final drive oil synthetic MSP/A" (for e.g. Castrol SAF-XJ)... would be nonsense. Isn't this just BMW moving away from the "SAF-XJ" terminology to their own more generic "MSP/A" terminology since they are no longer partnered with Castrol? Whether they've actually completed the transition away from the Castrol differential fluid entirely would be a separate matter, but I have to believe that when they do (or if they have already) the new replacement (a Shell product, no doubt) will be a quality oil that lubricates the differential just as effectively as the old one. |
