High speed balance and tire shaving/truing
I had picked up my wheels and tires off Craigslist but they were practically brand new.
The downside is that the previous owner must have had a bad alignment, bad suspension or a combo of both. I had been receiving a lot of road noise from the abnormal tire wear. The noise slightly diminished the more I drove it so I decided to wait a couple months to see if the noise completely went away. I had been contemplating on the tire shaving procedure the whole time but always decided not to. As the noise has not fully went away I decide to get this done this morning. For the local guys I had it done Weaver Brake & Tire in Marietta Excellent experience and very knowledgeable techs with a lot of expertise. I also opted for the high speed balance which I have never done before. I have always chose the machine balance. I was getting some vibration along with the road noise. Both have been completely eliminated and my car now runs/drives buttery smooth again. I should have done this off the gate I feel both these procedures require a great amount of expertise and Weaver Brake & Tire in Marietta is the only place I would get this done. couple short vids Last edited by f30luxline; 02-13-2015 at 07:05 PM.. |

Perhaps you acquired someone else's headache.
There are no bargains on Craigslist. I like that you opted for an alignment and did it before the abnormal wear took a greater toll on your tires.

I put the wheels and tires on at the same time I did the suspension so an alignment was warranted anyway.
I would still consider it a bargain based on the following; 1 - The price was for wheels and tires and was only $800, 1/3 less than brand new wheels alone. The wheels were also mint. I'm not sure how he was able to keep them in such condition as the wear would indicate otherwise. Unless his alignment and/or suspension was totally wrecked. 2 - The tires were practically brand new, measuring 7mm of the factory 8.2mm. The front tires are now 5.5mm after shaving. Rears weren't shaved. The value of these are about $900 new for 4. 3 - The cost of shaving and balance was only $75, add this to the cost and I only spent $875 for basically brand new wheels with brand new rear tires and 50% used front tires. I'll take this any day of the week |
