UH OHHH... I messed up

Hello everyone! So i kinda made a mistake and I'm freaking out now. So I live in Miami, FL and here the weather is nice enough that I drive with my sunroof open every day. Of course with my luck, the one night i forget to close it, it rains .

Thank god the leather doesn't soak up water so i was able to wipe the seats down with a towel. The carpets in the back got pretty soaked so i vacuumed up what i could and put bags of damp-rid in the back. Now on to my major concern.

When i turned the car on, the airbag and seatbelt lights turn on. I try clearing them with my jb4 and nothing happens. I thought maybe the jb4 would exit its mode when i try to reset the code, but it just keeps scrolling like if nothing i going on.

Does anyone have any tips on how i could get these lights off and fix this issue?

P.S. the light next to the sunroof switch that says passenger airbag off stayed illuminated all day today. Just in case thats relavent. Thanks for any tips and help guys!

Maybe the wires are in short circuit.

I'd turn the heat on MAX and direct it to the feet position, to dry everything. Leave it like that everywhere you go (with the top down you would feel hot), and maybe let it sit for a bit.

I would leave the top down again to allow it do dry out. This along with taking the mats out and otherwise removing as much water as possible will minimize further damage and mold smells. Just be sure to monitor the weather forecast.

Dont use your car for now i would suggest grabbing a leaf blower or some kind of blower and aim it at all the placess with electronics, give it maybe a day or 2 before turning it on again, worst thing to do on a wet electronic is to turn it on....try that and see what happens...also idk just random thought, disconnect the battery for that day? reconnect and once everything is 100%dry try starting again and go from there?... Im thinking there might be moist still inside the airbag section and seatbelt section...

the lights can probably be coded out, but you should address the dampness and get some serious air movement throughout the cabin. ie; fans, blowers, etc. Do a search for flood damage repair company. They could posibly loan you equipment. Google "COIT" or "servepro"

I left my sunroof open once for a thunderstorm and there was like 1/2" of water in the cubby/pocket in the middle of my console. My phone was sitting in that cubby too. I was amazed that neither my car nor phone had any issues. Good luck bro

So i did this for a whole day and drove with the windows and sunroof open. Even went to home depot and bought some damp-rid to put in the back seat. Saturday I decided to try clearing the airbag codes again with the jb4, and this time it worked. So everything is back to normal. Thanks for all of your help!

Great!!!!! Phew!

By the way, yesterday I washed my carpet to take all the salt and sand and everything out (slush etc of winter) and I was riding the whole day with hot air blasting on my feet as well. It worked to dry the thing, better than holding a hair dryer for an hour. I love this technique lol. Glad I had a sunroof to open, I was dying (and could not open the windows as it was -20 outside).

Its been my experience that the best way to solve the problem with the wet carpets is to pull them out of the car and dry them before there's time for mold to develop.

Unfortunately you might not be out of the woods yet. I had a decent amount of water spill into my passenger seat area back in August. I dried the carpet out and everything was good to go till mid November. Apparently there is a computer under the passenger seat and it got corroded over time from the water. In my case this caused the x-drive unit and a sub-woofer to go out. Luckily the dealer replaced it all. If I was you I'd have the seat and carpet taken out and get all the electronic components under there cleaned out. Otherwise you might be in for some bad news a few months down the road.

Again guys be careful with those carpets. The area underneath them is totally sealed from the outside but not the inside. So if you get a decent amount of water spilled take the carpet out and dry it plus the area underneath it.

You should also code your car for rolling up the windows/closing sunroof with the FOB / CA. Quite useful.

I didn't have enough time to take the seats and console out though... Not sure I would do that anyway, it's a lot of work. Had to wash it in the car. Well not really wash, but foam it with resolve foam, then scrub, vacuum, and dry. It's good now, for some time. Lol

you can rent a dehumidifier. you need to dry it out ASAP. a leaf blower isn't going to do shit.

luckily, it was rain water and not salt water or something. something is probably just shorted from being wet. it wouldn't be a bad idea to pull the seats out and clean all the contacts.
